Re: Great Planes F-4 Phantom

Second cockpit kit arrived today! Perfect, so I can work on them side by side, and compare to pics of the front and back office of the Phantom. Not sure how much reworking I'll do, depends on my creativity!

Some pics of the test fitting of the cockpit tub, and ejection rail, to ensure things will fit. Tested both seat positions, and it fits perfectly!

Re: Great Planes F-4 Phantom

Hold onto it for sure. It's super detailed, and while it won't be exact for an F-4, it's pretty close. The ejection seat looks to be a very close match, and a bit of creative work on the instrument panel could make it very scale. I'm not going super scale with this project, but super cool, that will work. The cockpit tub looks like a good fit, so just have to make sure the ejection seat fits under the canopy. I'll know that by end of tonight, if I get my butt in gear. I'll take pics, and add to this thread.

Hey! I've got one of those.

I got it years ago as a xmas present from a friend who knew I loved to build plastic models, but I never had any interest to build it. Its been sitting in the basement for decades. The thought never crossed my mind to use it in a model aircraft. Would love to see how you do yours. That would give me some ideas.

Oh, and inspite of being very worried about the plastic exhaust/tail cover, it went on fine. One mod I made though, was to make a 3/8th balsa copy of the 1/8th ply exhaust former, and then sand it a bit thinner, and properly angled, so the plastic part slide on, and essentially gets locke into place on the front. I did have a bit of a gap right near the tail hook area, but that was taped, filled with super fine sawdust, thin CA applied, and then some microballoons, and touch up with spot putty. Plastic always makes me nervous. Interesting thing, the F-4 Phantom plans that I ordered, are old RCM plans, but the fuse is identical in size to the Great Planes Phantom, the wing is similar, but it's a scale sized wing. The plans are meant for a single nitro DF unit, 77 sized.

Latest on the F-4, wings are almost completely covered, except for the bottom centre section. Have to cover the second splitter plate, and if I can ever locate my small airbrush, I'll get all the paintwork done on the plastic. Green is sprayed, I'm a bit dissapointed, as the local hobby shop plastic model expert was convinced that medium green was correct, and it's not. It's not too far off, but enough to notice.

Re: Great Planes F-4 Phantom

I tend to flop back and forth, if I need a break, especially from a scratchbuild. I'm almost done as much as I can on the F-4, other than detailing, until I get the cockpit kits, so plan on getting back on the 262 soonest. Plan is to not rush either one, and have them ready for the spring start. Also should have the Dave Platt 1/5th Spitfire done for spring, and my 1/4 SE5A. Leeann is progressing fast on her Super Chipmunk, then she'll probably tackle the Top Flite Corsair. Tons of other stuff on the go, including the full sized Hurricane, so it's going to be a busy winter!

Pictures of the build look great, Dave!

Hey, is the 262 on hold?? I see it hanging on the back wall. That is another beauty project you are doing...

Re: Great Planes F-4 Phantom

ST 75 or OS 91 would be 2 options I would seriously consider with this model, maybe even ST 90!. I had ST 90 many years ago on 11lbs spad, it rocketed into sky like a "Bat out of hell!"......
