Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

You know, nobody suggested that.....

And I didn't really check it either. I did restrict the exhaust outlet with my finger. I have to think about (replay) this one for awhile.

I guess the reseal overcame any other weak links.

It's gone now so..........

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

I didn't study all of the above posts but did anyone suggest checking to see that the pressure nipple on the muffler was not plugged?

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

Neat that you guys mentioned the limiter ring.

I did a full reseal and removed the limiting crap during reassembly. If it isn't doing anything, it's dead weight right?

The reseal made a pretty big difference. It was hard to imagine because the old ones didn't look bad at all. I think the biggest change actually came from the little tiny fibre washers on the fuel nipples.

I noticed that the low end needle is VERY sensitive. Even out of tune by 1/16 of a turn will cause it to be cranky and transition poorly. Maybe that limiting ring was set just a little too outside the range?

I also backed the throttle barrel limiting screw out a bit. Many have complained that they can't be shut down by closing the throttle. I experienced the same thing. The opening in the barrel REALLY needs to be closed to kill the engine.

Overall, I set the main needle slightly richer than I would an OS and even though it screams right out, she's still an enthusiastic slimer. After priming to get one or two good spits out of the carb, it starts on the first crack every time and revs right up without a glitch.

Thanks for all your help guys

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

Had to do the same thing myself. Outside air temp, glow plug, fuel makeup and tank position all have an effect on the mixture, so those limiting rings can be fine for their environment and setup, but not in the ball park for you.

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

I just took up flying upon retirement and bought an Alpha 40 trainer. I was having a lot of problems with my Evo 46 trainer engine, would idle okay but sputter when full throttle applied. Had the guys at the club head scratching trying to get it to run properly. Finally took the blue low throttle ring off so that we could adjust that. The guys figured the engine was running too rich on the low end so I kept adjusting the low leaner until I could throttle up high after idling for 60 seconds without flooding. Now to get it into the air. Where's an instructor when you need them LOL

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

I think you need a bit of OCD to be in this hobby in the first place, so feel right at home!

If the reseal doesn't work, keep me in mind. I may be even more stubborn, (hint: I'm here rather than getting much needed sleep).

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

OK, I tried the whole needle valve from an OS 46 FX. It does not mount to the backplate of an Evo very well, so I just let it hang to the side and used it instead of the Evo valve......

No change

Who's next???? LOL

BTW, I can be a stubborn SOB, so my annoyance with this engine has lead to obsession. I will conquer this thing dammit! It's a little wee 2C without an ignition system...How hard can it be?

Full set of seals on order.....

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

Seems like Evo has a "Monday, Friday" phenomenon like American cars. They're good, but the odd one is a lemon. I have an Evo 45 TPS and it runs great, no problems at all. However, I've read of others having problems like you are having. Sorry to hear that.

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

Why don't you try a OS needle valve assembly. I did so and my little Pts trainer evo runs like hell. Evolution needlevalve assembly is the culprit. I have it installed in my Sig Kavalier and it flys like a rocket. OS needle valve assembly...

Re: Evolution Alpha 45 Help!

Ev 45 trainer system, I have been running mine for 3 years, hasn't missed a beat. Did a reseal on it this spring. things to check:
seals on fuel nipples
fuel nipples, check for crack, they crack real easy. if you aren't sure replace them
clear plastic seal on low idle cap nuts
the rear crank clear plastic seal
there is a screw opposite of the high needle fuel nipple, should be a seal there too. there should be 4 fibre type gaskets 2 for fuel nipple, 1 for muffle nipple, 1 for screw on high needle.
ther should also be two gaskets under the carb. 1 o-ring, 1 flat metal (black) goes in the base first then the oring then the carb. The exploded view if the motor isn't to clear .
also if you take the head off, there should be two aluminum gaskets.

The EVOs do like 15% for sure, I am running 4 of them 2 - 52's 1 - 60 and the 45. switched to 10% and did notice a differnec for sure, also had to reset needles a bit.
