Re: Bought a used Bandit xl-5.... need help!

The motor is in stock on their site, but the ESC and esc/motor combo are out of stock. All three are out of stock at amainhobbies.com too, they just might be upgrading it!

It would be nice if they went with a 4 pole castle/neu sourced motor and castle esc like some of their bigger cars/trucks have (e-maxx, e-revo, x01).

ok .. about traxxas' veneilion motor upgrade being on some sort of back order... i whent to the traxxas site and it says the motor esc combo is not in stock... the guys at the local rc shop say it is because they must be doing an upgrade or revamping the motor or esc is this true? cause if so should i just wait? and what could they possibly upgrade on it ?

You'll get WAY more than 50mph with a 5700kv motor on 3s unless you gear it WAY down. You can easily get over 40mph out of the stock VXL motor (3500kv) and 2s with a bigger pinion.

I'm a fan of the Castle Creations BL combos, good value and good quality. Tekin, LRP, and all of the others mentioned are also great. You can even buy HK systems from China that look ok (I wouldn't recommend it).

Before you decide which BL system to go with you'll need to decide if you want sensored or unsensored. I run an unsensored system and have never had issues because of that. An unsensored system may "stutter" at starting roll, but IMO, if you're not a hardcore racer I don't think sensored is necessary. That said if you find a sensored system and you like the price, it's sure not a bad thing to have one. A sensored system has an additional wire that goes from the motor to the esc to provide positional data of what spot in it's rotation the motor is in, helps with smoother start-ups.

You should invest in a temp monitor, they can be quite affordable. Especially if you want to start pushing your run-times and/or speeds. I use a gun type that I got at Princess Auto on sale for $40.00. You can also buy small little rc specific ones if you snoop around. You can always use the finger hold test (hold your finger on the hot motor) to guage it, but I prefer more accurate info....

There are all kinds of brushless combos. The vxl is the one from traxxas and I never heard or seen anything on the traxxas forum about them discontinuing it. I have an XO-1 (just released early feb) which comes with a traxxas model catalog and the Velineon vxl brushless upgrade is advertised on page 13 and 44 so?.... Anyways Castle, Novak, Tekin, LRP, Reedy, duratrax are a few of the many manufacturers of brushless motor combos. It's like anything else theres a a wide pricerange and power levels, Some of the fun for me is making my rc's different. Even though vxl is waterproof, It's always interesting to see another RC with something other than a vxl. There are systems out there that can make your Bandit almost undriveable they have so much power. I run 4s in my slash and have gotten 120km/h out of it. Check it out:

Re: Bought a used Bandit xl-5.... need help!

you know what you guys are the best... thanks for the info,
i am actually running a 8.4v 7 cell.. buddy at the local rc shop said it was a newer bandit... and in the manual it mentions how the xl-5 has a low voltage cut off.... i am looking to go brushless but i hear from the local rc shop that traxxas brushless upgrades have stopped production? is this true and if so is there any other brushless esc combos that are bolt on to the bandit?

judgegixxer - i have not monitored my temps.. but when i first got it i ran it for maybe 8-10 min and the motor blew on me whent to the rc shop and told me it was way overgeared and they put a new motor in it and put the stock gears in, now it works like a dream, motor gets hot but that is after a good full run...

There is a huge selection of lipo chargers available with everything from simple and cheap to complicated and expensive. Any lipo charger over $60 will get the job done fo a long time. If speed is what you are ultimately looking for I would recommend lower kv motors (Slower) but they have more torque and run cooler than the hot hi kv motors thus they can handle 3S 11.1v, 4S 14.8v and sometimes 6S 22.2v operation. Kv is how many RPMs per volt a motor will spin. ie: a 5000kv motor will spin 5000rpm for every volt put into it. So on 3S it will theoretically spin up to 55500rpm. 2S would be 37000. Now a 2000kv motor on 6S will spin at 44400 rpm and have way more power & torque than the 5000kv on 3S spinning at 55500 not to mention run way cooler doing it. Thats why lo kv motors can be geared to the moon to get the speed. 5000kv and higher motors are mainly meant for 2S operation on fairly light vehicles. It should be ok in bandit just monitor your temps.

Running Lipo on your XL5 will bring your speeds up a bit. I wouldn't say significantly, unless you are able to make a large voltage increase. Say you are running a 7.2V (6 Cell) or 8.4V (7 Cell) NiMh, a 2 Cell Lipo is 8.4V or if your ESC can handle 3 Cell Lipo it's 12.6V. Voltage increase is where the real speed gain comes from. Even without a significance voltage change (ie. you're using 7cell NiMh and switch to 2 cell Lipo) you'll still get a little gain just because Lipos do deliver power more efficiently.

You will also notice more consistent speed, Lipo provides a more steady voltage all the way from start to finish as opposed to NiMh which is slowly dropping the entire time.

If you wanna make that thing fly get it going on a 5700Kv motor with 3S Lipo. You'll see 40Mph easily, maybe 50.

Whether you can run them or not depends on which XL5 you have. The newer ones have a Low Voltage Cutoff built in to them, but the older ones (3 years?) do not. I'm not sure how to tell the difference, did the Bandit come with any manuals at all?

If you have an older one that doesn't mean you can't still make it work. You just need to make sure you don't run the batts down too far. This can be done with a timer set for a very conservative amount of time (risky to take a chance this way) or by picking up up a Low Voltage buzzer alarm-they can be had on Ebay for less then $5. I ran my XL5 on Lipo for a little while using one of the buzzer alarms.

How aware are you the importance of watching your temps? I'm not sure how much experience you have in RC so I just wanted to check. Overheating is the single easiest way to destroy motors, brushed and brushless. Those Titan 12T are a great motor if properly cared for, but cook it once and she's done.

Do you have a temperature gun?

Lipo=more power=more runtime=more heat

Re: Bought a used Bandit xl-5.... need help!

thanks guys,
yeah i have been having a blast, changing the ride height really effects handling...

i am also gonna buy the bandit vxl... after everything is said and done to buy brushless and new esc, looking around 150 -200 , and a whole new vxl bandit for aprox. 300, and you are getting the 2.4 ghz transmitter... anyone know where to buy one online for the best price?

also i am only running nimh batteries on xl-5 can i buy lipo and run that, and if so will it take my speed up significantly?
any recomondations on chargers batteries and where to get them online?
