Re: Sopwith STLBP Nice! Tail draggers can work very well if you get the main gear far enough forward. spoils the scale looks on those old birds though! Just plop it down in the deep grass. |

Re: Sopwith STLBP 12 pounds of noseweight ! in the D7 !! Boy they must have went through a lot of props in those days. Tail draggers were bad news and the old timers knew it. I was grateful to change from a Cub to Cessna 150 when I took flying lessons. Had some good test flights, very quick turns because of the elliptical dihedral (caused by doped silkspan warping) but is hopeless landing, tips up, tore up the nose a bit, looks worse than it is |

Re: Sopwith STLBP Very nice! I had to add 12lbs to the nose of my 1/3 DVII..... it flew great. Short coupled WW1 models usually always need nose weight. Good luck on the first flight! I'm sure it will be a flyer. Scott |

Re: Sopwith STLBP FINALLY FINISHED !! Sopwith Land Tractor Biplane, other wise known as Hawker's Runabout. I chose if for the plain fabric covering, and a little easier cowling. I just have rudder and elevator, micro servos, and receiver, and was shocked at the amount of noseweight it needed anyway, for proper balance. It SO heavy that I am afraid now to fly it, the crash survivability of a bowl of eggs. Will go way out in the boonies some calm morning when the hay is 3 feet high. |

Re: Sopwith STLBP A local carpenter left me a load of kindling for my woodstove. In among the various trimmings were pieces of 1/4" X 1/8 " hardwood, perfect for wing joiners! |

Re: Sopwith STLBP Made quick foamboard versions of the wings, and pinned them in place,to check incidence angles, dihedral, strut length-didnt want surprises when I attach the wings |

Re: Sopwith STLBP Reality check on the wings--they're too weak. The plans are from a light free flight plan. I almost through them out So, will depend on the wire bracing big-time, makes me think the original old biplanes really depended on the bracing with those thin, flimsy wings |
