Yep! Lol. Not nearly as bad this time, though.

Ripped the motor box off and there's a bit of a crinkle aft of the left wing. Totally repairable once I get off my sulking butt.

Re: Extreme Makeover: RC Edition

One too many snap-rolls

I was coming in to do a fairly deep snap then instantly transition into a rolling harrier circle. Have done it dozens of times. This time, I did the snap and the fuse exploded into two main pieces. It split just aft of the canopy so I still had aileron control. Was actually kinda funny, as the forward section is plummeting to the ground, I rolled the wings level then instinctively I was pulling up elevator I think I actually was chuckling to myself about the lack of elevators as I hit the kill switch just before it hit the ground.

In retrospect, two very fortunate things happened: first, no parts came towards the pits, so nobody and nothing was hurt/damaged and two, there was a good crowd watching Unfortunately, no video, though.

Perhaps I shouldn't have posted these pics here for fear that someone might mistake this failure for a failure due to Bob's techniques and ideas. I firmly believe this failure was not due to Bob's techniques in any way. This was MY first attempt at lightening an airframe and lightening an ARF has a set of "issues" that wouldn't exist if you were building an airframe from the ground up, so to speak.

In looking at the pics from the build, I think there are probably many factors involved. For example, when I cut the foam for the new belly pan, I think I cut it too thin. The foam was no more that 1/2" thick and in hindsight, it probably should've been thicker. The diagonals were made from soft balsa. Again, probably should've used harder stock. A larger radius in the corners of the fuse sides, etc, etc, etc.

One other, in my mind, huge factor is the fact that this plane was broken in half last year after running out of gas while hovering. Where it broke last year is close to where it broke today. Hard to tell for sure but, it's close. Perhaps my previous repair was simply not good enough and eventually the old glue joints started to fail. It would only take one glue joint to fail and then the cascading effect would rip the rest of it apart.

If we want to play the "hyper-lite" game, we have to be prepared for failures. What's more important is to learn from these failures and do our best to engineer around these potential problems. I know I've learned from this. The next one will be better, stronger and just as light.

I recommend anyone thinking about trying these techniques to give them a shot. The result is an airframe that fly's like no other. If nobody tried this stuff we'd all be flying 30lb airframes with G-62's on the nose and slamming them into the ground then dusting them off and flying again. By flying them, I mean doing laps at mach 2 and dreading the fact that you'll need to land this pig eventually

On to the next airframe!!

As a matter of fact that's what I did after removing all the expensive bits from the airframe. I felt it was necessary to make some form of sacrifice to appease the RC Gods

Pics of the campfire to follow.

I still have the stabs and the rudder...... they're the only pieces that survived. Anyone need any of those parts??
