Re: Newbie learnin' question

For what it's worth, I took my SuperCub out on floats last weekend; here's what I learned:

1) DO use the larger propeller that comes with the floats. I'd already switched to a 10X6 prop which works awesome on wheels; on water, it struggled to get it in the air, and I was very much overworking the motor. It worked, but not well. Switched to the 10X8 water prop, HUGE difference.

2) Pendulum effect takes some getting used to. It was a little gusty at times, which made things interesting. Does settle it down though, and looks SOOOO pretty on flybys! The loops and such you can do with the SC normally are now more difficult, and I think more likely to shear off your wings if you DO get enough airspeed to try it.

3) No water rudder= have a boat or some method of retrieval handy. It seemed to me to be a balancing act to have enough speed that the tail rudder would turn it without wanting to take off or worse, bank on the water. In fact, while trying to turn it around and bring it to where I could pick it up, a gust of wind combined with just enough throttle flipped it over backwards. Had to wait for that same breeze to float it close enough to shore to pull it in. End of flying for the day, everything was still working but needed a good dry-off.

All in all though, I love this plane, the adaptability and toughness of it! The only one I've seen wrecked beyond redemption so far was a buddy's that decided he could fly it without any instruction or sim time... full speed into a chain-link fence was like sending it through a food processor!

Another note: if you have a hairy landing, or something foolish like misjudging altitude/speed and send it into the trees with floats on and have a minor dust-up, double-check things like the center position of the wings, and the wires for the float mounts... ask me how I know this!

Re: Newbie learnin' question

I am waiting for my Super Cub LP to arrive with the float kit for flying at the cottage this summer. I thought I would reduce the chance of issues with the neighbours and semi-retire my LT40 glow power on floats. I might convert it to electric, but for now I thought I would try the SC LP and maybe add ailerons to it if I find I need or want them. Let us know how the SC LP is on floats once you try it. Good luck and take your time checking and double checking everything is setup correctly once the floats are installed.

Re: Newbie learnin' question

Got floats for my SuperCub LP; I'm comfortable enough with it on land that some water flying is coming this summer since the airstrip we're flying from is literally beside a pair of lakes! My plan is to cut my chops on that plane because of its ease of repair and durability (for once I took the advice of others and it's really paid off!) while I'm building this Alien Aircraft Dragon kit:

might not be a good idea for a beginner though til your comfortable on floats.

It was fun flying while cruising, but we got going a bit fast and I was doing loops and rolls when we came through a narrow and I was on the down side of a loop when the sun hit me and I was blinded.....ended up in a dive and at the last second managed to level out literally as I hit the water. Flattened out the aluminum landing gear, cracked the fuse and floats. I flew the next day, but I made a point of keeping the sun to my back.

I thought it would be fun to land it on the moving boat, but better judgement prevailed....

Re: Newbie learnin' question

I learned to fly with the LT40 and put it on floats in my second season of flying. Taught myself to fly off water and absolutely love it. I am in the process of reconditioning the LT 40 to float fly at the cottage. I used the GP floats, they are built up balsa and covered in mono. They are heavier, which I found helpfull as they make the plane that much more stable and you have to use throttle to land, whereas on wheels it was hard to get the idle low enough to land unless you had some wind. Take your time with the float setup and double check the position of the mounting blocks you install before covering. I would also suggest you install blind nuts for the floats before covering. Consider how you will control the water rudder - servo in float? cable to servo in fuse? cable to horn on rudder? etc.. and make accomodations for it on the LT40.

You may destroy the LT40 before you get to floats or you may have the LT40 for years and years, everyones experience is different. I have repaired mine several times after crashes, but luckily the crashes have not been terrible!

One more thing, don't try flying from a moving boat, seems like a great idea at first, but then......well your imagination can take care of the rest.

Have fun and hope you have great success.

Mine, actually my forth one. I keep getting talked out of them. Now they are so hard to find. I will only sell if I find another new in box.

Hope it helps get them all ready for the big thaw.

Re: Newbie learnin' question

My son inlaw built the LT40, learned on a flight sim while building & is now on his 3rd year of flying with NO wrecks at all! Just a couple of broken props from hard landings!
Exellent bird! Would make a super entry level float plane.

Should be a good choice for floats

Re: Newbie learnin' question

By the time you are ready to fly off the water your first several aircraft will have hit the garbage can. Go to many float flys to observe and make your own decision. Some aircraft do not transition well to floats.
