Re: Renta-RC-plane??

years ago i was thinking of starting a business of teaching heli pilots to fly etc.. i was a rep for a major us company... which had no bearing on having maac insurance.

the minute money changes hands from instructor or student for services Maac is no longer present for either individual period. or the filed you fly at.

after researching for liability insurance and you will need way more than 5 million and your home owners wont cover you either if its a commercial venture.
the costs of the insurance alone was gonna run in the neighbourhood of 100.00 an hour to the student based on a modest amount of teaching and that barely covered the costs of up keep and fuel etc....

even if you help someone out and they give you a gallon of fuel that can be taken as charging for your time so be very careful in how you approach this.....

Well, it's been a couole of years now and we've not heard any more about the plane rental business.

Did it ever take off? Did it flame out?

MAAC insurance ????

Realy, who cares?
If it's a buisness you use buisness liability and for most part it is better covered than any MAAC insurance (there is a true story behind this).

I went to my insurance agent and they told me with my house insurance I have 5million personal liability and that covers me flying my TOY r/c aircraft...My premium would most probably increase if I make a couple claims though

The only time you need MAAC is if you are flying your TOY at a club field were it's covered by MAAC. and thats just so the other flyers who use that field continue to keep coverage from MAAC.

As for renting a TOY plane, If your in my town I will always PIMP out my TOY planes for a fellow modeller ...most tell me "I make it a policy not to fly other peoples stuff" when I offer

What I was essentially told/understood, was that so long as your sponsorships are not profitable, ie: earn a living from etc. then you are still considered a recreational flyer and would be covered.

I know of very few people that could ever earn a living from sponsorships alone, so I don't think its of real concern to 99.99999999% of RC'ers out there. In fact I would be very surprised if anyone from Canada carries enough sponsorships to earn a living off of

That's a question for MAAC officials. Wouldn't be right for me to offer an opinion on that.

My point was that when starting a new business venture of this type a legal opinion may help with the decisions. In this case there may be federal regulations in play.

In Canada the definition of Model aircraft means for recreation (ie non-commercial). Once you start a business of this type it may be moving outside those bounds. This is not a MAAC thing it is a federal regulation.

You may want get a legal opinion on if the business means the aircraft would no longer be considered recreational. Also would the renters be responsible for showing proof of insurance? Or is insurance something the business provides?

It is an interesting idea and it may have a market in some areas of Canada. I'm not aware of anyone that offers a similar service.
