Well if your into a bit of reading and some tinkering here is a good read on how to build a tunned pipe for a 2 stroke motor. The pipe in the artical is larger the it should be just a smaller scale for your 2 stroke.

Re: Making mufflers?

We quickly learn that what goes up must come down, however in tinkering with model airplane engines its not immediately obvious that what goes in must come out.

I am not an expert by any means but having experimented with various model exhaust systems what Im seeing & reading is that your muffler VOLUME is too small . Compare the volume with your original muffler & then go look at the volume of a similar engine size helicopter muffler. Big difference HUH?????

Also making the last outlet tube slightly smaller diameter & much longer length will aid in noise reduction.

Have fun experimenting !

Re: Making mufflers?

Many OS engines require a lot of back pressure in order to deliver enough fuel for WOT (wide open throttle). I have run into trouble when installing a pitts style muffler on OS engines. I prefab my custom mufflers out of 6061 aluminum tubing and plate, then take it to the local welding shop that specializes in welding aluminum. Their scrap bin is a good place to look for metal.

So I did run the plane with my muffler and with the stock one ,I think I have better rpms with the stock one .And I did my first flight with the stock muffler. But I was also having overheating problems with the cowel so I with do more testing.

Re: Making mufflers?

The more corners the gasses have to turn the quieter it gets. The dead end chamber just before the outlet will cause back pressure and also reduce the noise. Smooth flow is the best and also the noisiest.

Re: Making mufflers?

How does it go? Did you have a chance to run it?
