Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

Jack M. and Scaleguy: Thanks for the input! Just like the doctors, we can all learn from post mortems! I have some appreciation for your pain when at the beginning of last season, I lost a really nice flying kit built Great Planes Giant Scale Extra 330 (DA100) on the maiden flight. I was making a really smooth landing approach after a successful first flight and clearly remember saying to myself that I had cleared the fence at the end of the runway I was wrong! In my case I discovered that due to some medical issues my vision had deteriorated quite a bit over the previous winter to the point that my depth perception was quite impaired. After getting some new (expensive) glasses I was good to go again.

I will be careful about the tuning with my 170 and thanks again for sharing the information that may save other aircraft!

I bought the engine from Jack Durgen with about 14 flights on it so I am hoping to leave the needles alone (assuming it is close to being in tune) and just flying it. Any input here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ya it sounded lean at the top end during the first flight but i did not think it was going to cause a dead stick on the second flight. I recommend to keep the top end a little rich to prevent overheating at high speed flying with thew pipes. Well mine was tuned for the V5 Canister with no problem and didn't change the top end for the pipes and overheated... i would not leave the top end needles the same if they were on cans or stock mufflers. yes a new 43% with a quad in it sounds like a one of a kind plane already.

Jack we know it hurts , but it has happened to more than a few of us , I know you wont let this keep you down for long.

This plane will be greatly missed!!! It was a real beauty and seemed to fly very well.

The motor quit at unfortunately the worst place possible and Jack and the plane didn't stand a chance!!

Good news though - Jack is already behind the sticks of his 40% and rumour has it that a new 43% may be built for him with potentially a QUAD in it

So, I need everyone's help here to encourage Jack!!!... should we do another 43% with a DA200 in it?????

Trumpetman,

Just don't run the 170 to lean!

Jack thinks that was the problem with his. When he took everything apart he found the teflon on one of the headers had completely melted off and a hole had burnt through the flex portion of one header.

These were new headers for the build so this means this happened only after about 25 minutes of engine run time.

So make sure you see some natural smoke in your exhaust to begin with as your engine must still be on breakin so should still be on 32:1 Lawnboy petroleum based oil NOT synthetic yet.

You must be about same altitude as Beaverlodge right? If so you shouldn't need much if any fooling with the needle setting yet I would think.

Jack, what say you?
