Re: Flymentor vs helicommamd hobbyking has the flymentor in stock now (I just bought 2 for a couple of friends). Another option not mentioned which is cheaper than the helicommand (still much more expensive over the flymentor) is the skookum 720. Of course you need a fbl heli but even that can be better for beginners due to the low parts count. The 720 has an autoleveling feature, it won't hover in one spot for you but if you need to bail you can flick a switch, let go of the sticks and it will put it into a hover for you. |

Re: Flymentor vs helicommamd I seen a flymentor for sale recently here and I believe it was in your neck of the woods and I am not sure if Rick still has one(Townboy). Since I have joined I have never seen a helicomand for sale on here, but I also have not been actively looking for one as they are out of my price range . |

Re: Flymentor vs helicommamd Well I guess ya can't argue with results! fwiw even if you can't find one locally there's always lots of reputable dealers online that'll have one. Hopefully it's everything it's cracked up to be. Really the only important thing is that you're having FUN with it! I hope you'll post back here in a couple months (or whenever you have some flight time with it) and let us know how things are coming along. |

Re: Flymentor vs helicommamd Thanks everyone for your input and experiences. You have definitely helped me make a decision. Now the question is where do you buy them in the GTA? Cheers ....John T |

Re: Flymentor vs helicommamd My own personal experience... Started with Micro Hirobo SRB Quark. That little heli is expensive but was worth it. Taught me how to hover and then fly slowly. I never had to put training gear on when I got my 1st 450. But flying a Fixed pitch and Collective pitch is a whole new ball game. I was determined to progress. Even though I am slowly learning how to fly the 450, the CRASHES are there! So many crashes to count! There was a time, just after a rebuild, I crashed the heli again just after a few seconds of flying, lol. I almost gave up. So frustrating sometimes. The biggest challenge for me was nose-in. Hovering or flying towards me. Then, it hit me. "What if" I give these auto stabs a try. Researched thouroughly and ended up buying the Helicommand. That piece of equipment is expensive! Not to mention having to buy an 8 channel radio to fully utilize all the features (auto trim and remote sensitivity). Setting it up in your computer and in the heli itself is no easy task either. Take that (price and extra time setting up) into consideration. Anyways, I was able to set-up my HC in my 450 and flew her. Is it cheating? YES. The HC is hovering steadily (even with wind) for me. But that is where it can only help me. I still need to give stick inputs in order for the heli to move and fly around. If I am about to crash or I gave wrong stick input . . .I let go of the sticks and the HC will upright it to hovering level, saving me from crashing. That is if you have enough height to recover. I am happy to say that within a month or so of flying, not 1 single crash! I was able to master nose-in flying in just 5 battery packs. Already doing lazy figure 8s and I am not afraid when the heli is facing me. This is even winter time where my hands are freezing. I can let go of the sticks and breath through my hands to warm them up a little. I saw myself taking out the stabilization feature a few percentage at a time in each flying session (6 packs/flying). Within the 2nd month...I don't use the stabilization anymore, took it out and sold it on ebay and got some of my money back. Wish I purchased one when I was just starting. Should have saved me from buying ALL those replacement parts. It gave me confidence to fly nose-in and do more forward flying in any direction. Less time rebuilding also, lol. A word of caution. Since you will be getting bolder doing more stuff with auto stab in a heli, it is so easy to be carried away. There was an intance where I let the heli flew too far away from me that I don't even know what is the orientation. I am so worried I would lose signal. Since I have the HC in there, I let it hover steadily and I was the one who walked closer to it just to know where the heli is facing. Ok, that is just me. I learned a lot with HC on my 450. Actually, wish I save my HC for future use. Like now where I want to practice backward flying. |

As far as the original question, I have read somewhere that flymentor has just copied helicomands software. Not sure how true it is, regardless they both work well and price is almost always the deciding factor. BTW, the hardest part of the flymentor is getting you computer to recognize it. |

Re: Flymentor vs helicommamd I suppose if you're going to use it to bail you out when you've lost control it might be handy. imo flying with it on all the time is no fun at all though. One other thing I'd put forward is that things can get out of shape pretty quick with a heli, and you have to have the reflexes, and presence of mind to flick that switch before it's too late. Really it's all in what YOU like. Some people find them helpful, personally I've never had a use for them. Everyone's entitled to their opinions. Even if they *are* wrong |

Re: Flymentor vs helicommamd +2 on the Flymentor and its reasonable low cost.As a Training aid it has allowed me to progress leaps and bounds.Learned more in the past year than i had in the previous ten Beleive me if your new to helis its still going to be a challenge even with a flymentor. It just adds one more level of confidence and might even save you a few crashes and money.Put the money in your pocket instead of towards crashed broken parts.Whats not to like about that?! I guess its safe to say that i disgree with Rotor monkey. It has done just the opposite for me and made my learning curve much easier and enjoyable. But hey like he says it's just my opinion You turn it on or off with the flip of a switch..I really like it Jonnyflash, Here is a recent thread on RCC for you to quickly check out.I'm trying to describe to another member how it has helped me out with the "nose in" hover..Read through the three pages if you have time https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/showthread.php?t=129017 |
