2 of these going in a 1/5 mustang this year.

I don't think they will last as long as A123 brand but for $3.55 for a 1100 mAh pack they don't have too. They won't put out the amps as well but for Rx power they will work fine.

All balance charge from the oustside thru my switch/charge jack with my FMA Multi 4 and can be left fully charged till ready to fly.

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

I make up my own battery packs. I use the Sanyo 2700 nimh batteries. I cycle them individually before I assemble the packs. They have worked fine for me and I get good life out of them. Used to be 2300 and 1500. As Sanyo made bigger battery capacity I just kept buying the biggest AA capacity. They have been @ 2700 for about 3-4 years now so that may be the limit.

I buy them at my LHS and they go thru lots of them so they are always fresh.

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

Unless I knew the guy I would find it hard to trust used battery's. If they were nimh I would throw them out and put in some Life battery's. I bought nimh's 3 years ago and by the following year their capacity had dropped from 1800 mAh to 1200 mAh, they were hydrimax 2000 mAh.
I have some HK life packs going on the 3rd year and are working well. I use A123 in my bigger stuff like 50cc though. 4 years and counting.

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

I am with you Frank. I disassemble older questionable battery packs that don't cycle properly, clean the ends up and then use them in my camera, wireless keyboards etc.

If you guys have nimh batteries and you are using the trickle chargers that came with your radios you might want to check with someone that really knows batteries. Trickle chargers were designed to charge nicads not nimh. I know there is a difference but I don't know what it is. You might be affecting the life/performance of your batteries.

I tossed all my wall chargers so I don't screw anything up accidentally. I'm not that smart.

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

Glad to hear that you did the proper checks. You just saved yourself a pile of money and grief. I am with Mike on batteries, I fire them in the junk in put in new.
I have batteries here that I had in my 35% after I switched over to A123. The old batteries cycle fine but I refuse to sell them. I'll cut them apart and use them in a flashlight or something.

Quote ""THINK that the previous owner tried to charge them with the same wall charger that most people use for their 40 & 60 sized Aircraft - this type of unit would have taken DAYS to charge up each of the 2000 mah flight packs. (I don’t think this fellow knew that)"

Yes, but you can leave the 2500 mah on the smaller charger all week and not worry about overcharging. Slow charging is always better to balance the cells. I do both fast at the field and trickle at home. Yes, it takes 4-5 times longer to charge them on the standard charger.

PS I now have learned that 2500 mah is pushing it for AA cells, best capacity max for AA's is 2100 mah.

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

When I buy anything used there is no way I even want the (NEW) batteries.
Just not worth it. But that's just me.

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

I put a 2600 mah NM-HI battery in my HiTec transmitter last year. I have not charged it since last fall. I went to use it and noticed that the battery was very low. So being busy at the time I plugged it into the normal charger 50 ma. and left it for four days. It seem to stall out at 9.6V. I put it on my other charger at 140 ma. over night and it came right up. If you charge these batteries at 1/10 the capacity they get very hot when full. Anytime a battery gets hot is not good. I have noticed that these batteries come up to near full voltage before the capacity is full.

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

Answer; The plane was reputed to be in 'Fly Away Condition' with only TWO flights on a newly finished Airframe.

Yes; I do have a good charging system that I used to check these batteries (cycled each pack 10 times).

Re: TWO Problems - One Plane

question : did the seller tell you the batteries were shot or good ?
Advice: when buying a used AC, you never know how old the batteries are and how they were taken care of. Throw them out and install new packs, preferably A123's and buy yourself an FMA charger. It takes about 10 minutes to charge back to full capacity after the initial charge. You may need a regulater for the ignition battery depending which ignition system you are using.
