Re: Nitro vs Gas

We used to get fires regularly warming up glow engines in the winter with a propane torch. There was often a but of fuel spilled somewhere and you had to watch carefully as the flame from methanol is almost invisible in the sun light. Sometimes your first indication was that the paint or covering close to the engine would start to darken!

The only other fire was a small electric plane that ingested a bit of snow and on the next start up the speed controller went up in flames. There was some mad scrambling to get the battery unplugged!

Re: Nitro vs Gas

I've only seen two models causing fires. One was a converted chain saw motor years ago in a Mr. Mulligan 1/4 scale. Smoke started in midflight, it was landed asp and we pilots beat out the grass fire with our shirts. The plane (as a pun was toasted). The next fire was a jet, it became erratic in flight and crashed causing a fire in a field, there was a fire engine on site so only about a half acre was burned. The plane was salvaged and checked out and they think it had a small pin hole in a fuel line which may have let raw fuel in the body and it lit on impact. Kerosene was the fuel used.

Zenoah G260 PUH. While not as popular, there are a few gassers out there. There are even gas conversions for popular electrics such as the Goblin.

Re: Nitro vs Gas

Gas electric glow , I love them all . I must say if the engine goes Brrrrrrr I like them better but I could care less what I have to put in it to make it go Brrrrr. good points about the differences though ,but I think the pro's and con's are more related to the user and application than the engine it's self . gasoline does smell but golw fuel is extremely toxic and is much harder to use without getting it all over yourself. as a person that loves them both I think the only real difference is the glow is quite messy . the glow works better in small planes and gas for big . I did build a 106cc 4 cycle and ran it on glow , it had a ton of power and worked great but the mess was unreal, took a whole roll of paper towel to clean my 35% carden extra LOL .and the tank had to be huge I think it was 60oz , getting 2 flights per gallon gets a little rich .@$30.00 a gallon 6 flights is $100 . but for the smaller engines glow is fine ,I use gloves when I use it now though .. cheers Roger

Sounds like you would like diesel then. Give it a try, lots of them still available in Europe.

Everything has a place and time !
If noise is an issue go with electric!!
If you love the sound of gas and scale flying get a gas!!
I have both and love the sound of the gas and also love the hassle free electric.
try picking the one that suits you the most!!!

I have an E glider here that gets 45 minutes on a pack, put in two and I could match that. I also used to have a trainer with an OS .26 and a 6 oz tank that would do 45 minutes too. There was plenty of room for a bigger tank.

On the glow/gas subject I have a new Sullivan tank that warns not to use it for gas as the polymers in the tank will deteriorate over time. I also have a Dubro tank but it doesn't say anything of the sort. I have the correct stopper and tubing and the Sullivan is closer to the size I want - what do you guys think?
