Re: Big Electric Variable Pitch Prop- up and flying!

Actually, I enjoyed the sound at every stage of the flight in the video.
On taxi you could hear the pitch (and sound) change- even heard a bit of beta here and there too.
On spool up, no mistaking the scream of the RPM going throught the roof.
And the take-off... Mmmm-mmm
In the air.. SWEET
and the landing full beta on touchdown... ICING on the Cake!. I loved it. Me want! Me want! ...LOL

The sound is quite unique but very scale... All full size machines that are capable of beta pitch make this sound when the pitch is "flatter" than the forward speed. The sound actually helps to know your power settings. I use the stick throttle to control the power settings with mid stick being flat or no thrust pitch. In flight when you are "slowing" the plane the sound changes to the "woosh" so it gives a little feedback as to power setting.

The approaching Doppler has a sound that fixed pitch do not. Quite unique.

WOW!! I cant believe I missed this thread!

Just watched the video from post 1. Amazing!! Me want! Me want!! Just the sound was amazing. Performance seemed great too!

I can think of several aircraft in my stable that I would love to have this feature installed. I'm following this thread!

Will certainly be keeping an eye on this in the future. Well done!

Re: Big Electric Variable Pitch Prop- up and flying!

Hey Guys,

Thank you for the continuing interest and comments.

Alan, I have to hold on to the design a little longer as I signed an agreement on mutual sharing of "intellectual property" with a US company that tested the prop on a very cool project they were doing.. don't think its going anywhere but have to wait till the agreement expires. I actually scaled it up and ran nearly 5000w though a 24" version of this prop.. it was very impressive.

Matt.. The "Pitch Pump" takeoffs were just a test phase that turned into too much fun. I wanted to test the design and durability but the acceleration from this method was silly fun. Its not at all a scale style takeoff and mimicking a turboprop is what this system intends to do.

As a little update - carbon blades of a more scale profile and fastening arrangement are now being produced - will keep everyone posted as to progress.

super cool. not sure I would rev the snot out of it and then add pitch.. but I mean, its super cool as a test.

Hi Chris,
Nice job, wonderful sound. Perhaps you can supply drawings, build pics. There's a lot of guys who have the ability and patience to make their own.

Number one is the way I see most real props done. Some have counterweights to help take load off pitch actuator.

I have done some modelling on the props...came up with 2 possible directions to control the props, and I am not certain which would be the better.1)a single pin on the prop base, with all props controlled by lineal servo by way of a thrust bearing and steel rod to servo arm, or, 2) a pinion gear mounted on the base of the props ,controlled by rotation of the base pinion gear on a shaft affixed to the servo shaft head.
