Its refreshing to hear from people with common sense rather than "chicken little"'s for a change

Herd mentality? Are we Lemmings running off the same cliff? Sharks with the smell of blood? Pumped up by a media willing to exaggerate anything to get attention.

Remember a few years back when AIDS was the focus of the media? An epidemic? Effects less than 1% of the population but cancer will take the lives of 30% of us I'm told. Where was the hype on that?

Drones, lasers and birds all pose a risk to air traffic and are worthy of attention especially to SMALL aircraft but the focus has become airliners. That is just pure sensationalism and is off balance in my view.

Drones are new and sexy, birds and lasers are old news.

If the media reported on every "laser strike" that happens to aircrews in Canada daily then the flying public would have something else to worry about. The risk to flight after one or both pilots get temporarily blinded is significant? Almost daily some moron on the ground shines their "toy" lasers at overflying planes (frequently at police/medevac choppers). These strikes get reported, investigated...and quite often solved with charges being laid. Strangely enough the incidents rarely show up in mainstream media. Not sure why, but drone mania gets all the press.

The pilot in the article does have some valid points. Just on my shift I see at least 2 bird strikes every year. No UAV strikes yet. Lots more birds.

Problem is, the way I see it, birds are flesh, feathers, bones, tendons, etc. Not too often do we see actual damage, lots of goo, sometimes feathers, an occasional wing stuck in a wheel well, but that's about it. It all gets pretty mashed up on impact. UAV's on the other hand are made up of plastic, carbon fibre, wire, brushless motors, and lipo batteries. I see a lot more potential for holes in flaps, radomes, and engines. With more damage, comes the potential for catastrophic endings.

That was on the road, coyotes are the ones that I go off the road to get!

Total agreement with that!

My buddy Dale will disagree though, when you see a vehicle upside down in the ditch "Take note" he says "How many diffs does it have?"

So maybe they do go "off road"!

Back to the subject at hand, it's amazing that hundreds of people die in traffic each day and we give zero thought to mixing it up out there on the road. Yet we get all cranked up about the remote possibility that a pound and a half drone might dent an airliner weighing many tones.

Now that was a legitimate threat to safety!

It's good to get some real perspective on these issues.

LOL, kind of humorous and yet makes a good point.

I like how the author is well informed enough to see the trend towards smaller and smaller, less dangerous, yet more and more capable hobby drones.
