Thanks for the tip. This is the second time the gear mount has failed so a beefier solution is obviously in order! I'll be sure to start a thread when I get around to the repair.

Though I tuned the engine at home over a month ago it was just yesterday that I got the chance to re-maiden the plane. Incredibly fast and, with the stock muffler, incredibly loud. Unlimited vertical.

During a touch and go on my second flight, however, the gear tore out the mounts. I didn't hit especially hard, so I'm guessing I didn't reinforce it enough when I moved the gear forward. Looks bad but I've fixed worse.

Modified nut installed, thread lock and all.

Thread lock for the single bolt adapter.

Installed.

While I was at it I removed the el cheapo stock plug and replaced it with the right stuff.

I have a custom spinner on order from Tru Turn - when that arrives I can install the gorgeous Biela prop for a photo op before I remove it in favour of the specified 18 x 8 2-blade break-in prop. At this point I'm just about ready for a re-maiden. Now to wait for warmer weather!

... and take it to the grinder. A few notes.

1. Wear eye protection.
2. Hold the drill so that the washer edges are in the same plane as the grinding wheel
3. Operate the drill in the forward (drive) setting to spin the washers in the opposite direction of the wheel's rotation
4. Move the drill left and right to spread the impact on the grinding wheel. Holding it in one place makes a BIG GROOVE. Ask me how I know!
5. If you do any precision grinding with that wheel, be prepared to true the face afterwards.

Remove the washers from the dowel.

There will be burrs on both faces of each washer - file them down.

Success - washers in!

Success - nut in 12mm socket!

Next step - a couple of washers. Of course, those are not a standard size either. A 5/16" inner diameter worked, but the outer diameter was too large to fit.

How to evenly reduce the outer diameter? Hmm... let's mount the washers on a tapered dowel...

... chuck the dowel in the drill...

Turns out I was able to make the single bolt prop adapter work by drilling out each of the holes 1/32". I did deviate from Valley View RC's installation instructions in one respect - step five directs you to cut off most of the original prop shaft in order to make use of the nut at the bottom:

Quote:
5. While securely holding the retaining nut, cut the pilot shaft section off with the
Dremmel or a hacksaw, be sure to remove about 1/16” of the hex.

I wanted to save the shaft for possible future use so I ground a 13mm nut to fit a 12mm socket.

A little nut reduction math. As you can see, it was not a clear-cut case of reducing 13mm to 12mm, but rather 12.84mm to 12.12mm.

Edges marked. If I do this again I will put some reference marks on the top face too, because as the edges are ground the numbers, of course, disappear.

To the grinder. I had to keep a quenching tray handy because even a couple of passes heated the nut up a lot.

Re: Pulse 125 - swapping out the DLE 20 for an RCGF 32

With almost everything done, it was time to double check the balance and mount the ignition components.

I will be putting a 3-blade 17 x 10 Biela prop on this engine with an aluminum spinner. For balancing I mounted one of the 2-blade 16 x 8 Xoar props I had as extras for my DLE 20. I figured the weights would be pretty close with either prop but I will check them again before the (re-)maiden.

When I was marking my old aluminum spinner for drilling the bolt holes I noticed something that speaks to the lack of quality in this engine: The bolt holes are not equidistant from the prop shaft hole!

There looks to be about a millimetre difference; it's not as obvious in the photos but it's very clear to the eye. I will be careful drilling props and spinners in future.

Anyway, I got the prop mounted, all the ignition components loosely placed and the hatch and wings on, the I put the plane on the scales.

By shifting the battery and ignition around I got within a millimetre of the CG. Here's the data from the spreadsheet (click to enlarge):

The lateral balance is good with only 30g extra at the port wheel. Nothing to worry about there.

With everything in place, I got all the ignition components mounted and wired up. A place for everything and everything in its place.

Not much left to do - Install the new prop and spinner (when they arrive), connect the fuel line, put some thread lock on the standoff bolts and charge the batteries. Then mix up some gas and fire it up!

Other than me being a smarty pants. Keep at it. As I always watch your threats, and comments. I trully beleive you are having a ball in this hobby.

Dale, thanks for the tip. As it happens, I knew that... the markings are just a little reminder.

You're right - I'm having a very good time! I enjoy time in the shop as much as I enjoy time at the field.

And I hope it's my threads you're watching...

Eh? Did somebody report this thread for making threats?

Nice job so far, John!

Thanks Ed. It certainly isn't subtle! Lateral balance check - full balance check - coming up.
