Indeed Joe! A great story of re-igniting a first love. As my moniker suggests, I got back into RC through rotary wing models. Like you, I came back to RC after buying a co-axial from a big box store. I enjoy the total focus that surrounds RC flight. A focus that takes me away from the idiosyncrasies of daily life.

I read much passion in many posts on these (and other) fora. I take offense at the parochial views. "Us & Them"; They are not like US! I cannot claim to be a purist. Helicopters are not my only love, I also enjoy flying fixed wings. I resent commentaries that imply that "I swing both ways" because I indulge in things some chastise.

Returning to the world of RC after decades of absence brings me back to a very different world. I would like to enjoy the FPV experience as well in this ever increasingly complex world of miniaturization.

Unlike some, space is at a premium in this urban setting. There aren't the large farmers' fields or highways with no bumber-to-bumper traffic (in fact they christened it well - a Parkway). I have flown helis (from micros to 450s) and micro planes on public grounds (aka parks). And, yes, the idea of flying in this uncontrolled space concerns me. I've contemplated larger scale models. I've been looking at the local clubs. First contacts were pleasant. Camaraderie would be enjoyable. Unfortunately, clubs appear divided in interest. That is uninviting. The foray continues.

Thank you for reading. Soap box off.

Now, to the point - "rc & drones". I took a liking to the MQ-9 Reaper model. It looks 'cool' (though a belly lander - like many of the prop pushers - or twins - twinstar, CL-XXX series - would be much more practical).

Just recently, "If a Drone Strike Hit an American Wedding, ..." made the news. I gather that, by association, this 'spectacle' in the sky would bring much unwanted criticism (not to mention the FPV aspect of it. I've also read that it isn't that good a model flight/structural wise).

Thanks for the invite Scott, definitely something I will consider when I am down at the coast. I have attended the Shuswap float fly and Princeton Jets events (as a spectator) and really love seeing what others are doing.

Oh, I still have the 1st TREX clone flying, it's still in one piece and I've since upgraded to all metal heads, upgraded the gyro's and CF blades. I have 2 still in boxes standing by for the "Just in Case" things. They are fun to fly in the winter when it can be done from the back and front yard. (Now that will spark another discussion, lol)

Then I asked for the Walkera 4 channel heli which was more agile outdoors. From there I orderd 3 x 80 dollar TREX 450 Clones with 6 channel radio's along with a training kit. Took me about 2 months to learn to hover, and 5 months to finally enjoy flying the heli.

But to summarize it all, it re-ignited my first love, and that's Flying airplanes. Not a bad thing to have those heli's around.

What does this mean. Probably in the next yr or two there will be more new rc pilots than the total number of rc pilots out there now. That is a very good and bad thing for the sport . The big heli that princess auto has on sale for 199$ looks much the same size as the ones that fly at the local club. I can see some nasty accidents with that puppy.
So in the end the serious flyers may still be there but will be in the minority and the public will only see the actions of the majority new unregulated flyers for better or worse.

okay its only a 13 inch rotor just googled it but looks big in box. "World tech toys colossus".

I looked it up. a 13 in rotor is still pretty respectable. Especially for a co-axial heli.

I think this is a great thing. These are "seed" models. They get people started in RC. Some will try it and decide they don't like it, others become fanatics, go on the internet, youtube, etc- and decide they want to get into some serious helis. Hopefully it results int them joining clubs and MAAC. Good for your local club. Good for MAAC

Thats funny, I know lots about hunting and very little about FPV....That said, this technology and looking at the videos coming out of ytube, the simple go-pro looks easy to spot things the size of a game animal. The ability to fly to a few of my "Honey Holes" to take a look, rather than bush crashing and scaring animals off with our sound & smelly scent, you could possibly spot game and assure they were there---even with a 6 hour head start, it still would give me an advantage in some situations,,,,,,,I hunt for meat that I consume only, not trophy hunting, and anything else I really try to get pictures of,,,,BC outdoors is incredible,,,,

As a side note BCsaltchucker and Fuzzydog, you fellows are welcome to contact me and visit our club as my guest, if your in this neck of the woods,,,

Re: rc and drones

I don't know much about hunting at all. But I would love to get involved in hunting if it meant using my fpv planes as part of the hunt.

But I can see the ethical problem doing such a hunt for sport, and of course the laws in place to keep planes out of the hunt are in this spirit of hunting ethics. But some kinds of hunt are not for sport, but instead for culling invasive and destructive species, like the wild boars and perhaps the urban deer we have around here. Maybe even Canada Geese. Also ranchers have a legit need to keep predators away from their livestock, thus have justification for using all means to detect and hunt predators.

Downside is ... much as folks fear FPV planes as 'eyes in the sky meant to spy' there is probably no way in heck we could actually see and identify such animals with out typical setup due to our low res, low end video equipment. The analog link video is extremely limited and good only for video piloting, not looking for finding stuff on the ground. The most we can do is to look for down brightly painted airplanes using HD cam - and review the footage afterwards. That works when you have a good idea where the plane went down, but animals could be anywhere and they are typically camouflage by nature.

Can use a FLIR cam on low res video link to find live beings. Not sure how they work in daytime. These cams cost a fortune today, not in a hobbyists budget but for a farmer it could be a great tool.

HD live video is coming, but it is not here yet. That could be a real game changer .. and game finder - ha!
