Howard's in the House

Mr. Hughes unexpectedly showed up for a sneak inspection and to everyone's delight was impressed!

Radial Engine

Well the mechanic's finally mounted the Pratt & Whitney twin-row 14-cylinder radial engine. They say it's rated for 700 HP but with some tweaking it'll put out over 1000 HP.

MPX Connector

I was in Edmonton sometime ago to watch the Riders throw the Grey Cup away to the Alouettes and I stopped in at Great Hobbies to pick up a couple of the MPX connectors. Note they sell the plug and socket separately. I know HobbyKing sell's the same connectors for 1/3 the price and you get 10 sets in stead of 3 (if I recall).

I soldered the connector to the wing servo's to make connecting at the field easier. Just group all the positive's together, negative's together, and each signal wire has a post of it's own. This way there's no mixing up aileron servo's at the field - mitigating any disasters.

A few more covering pic's.

Covering Finally Finished!

I'm sure that I dragged the covering process out over the last 3 months or so. I think I was afraid to start the fuselage with the chrome covering.

I've never used UltraCote before (only MonoKote), a bit of a learning curve with the chrome covering... the big one being not have the 'shrinking' temperature set above 290 deg F otherwise the chrome will show grey areas.

There's so many curves for this bird. I used wax paper to rough-out the shapes for almost every cut for the chrome pieces. Just wrap the portion to be covered with the wax paper and use a finger nail to lightly trace out the piece - then transfer the template over to the covering.

I plan on putting some rivet details throughout - so hopefully the imperfections will be masked some what.

Fuselage / Wing Fairings

Here's a couple of pic's showing the fuselage fairing with the underside of the wing body.

I used a product from USC called Icing which is an autobody finishing putty. The Icing has a setup time of roughly 10 minutes (depending on how much hardener is used) and at roughly the 5 minute mark there's a couple of minutes where one can use a hobby knife (or similar) and shave the compound close to the desired shape - thereby reducing the sanding required.

I was impressed with the finished product and will be using this product for some time to come... though it is ~$30 for 0.70 Liters (which will last me a dozen builds I'm sure).

Re: Hughes H-1 Racer (Build Log)

It's been a long time since my last update for the H-1 build. Lot's of good things have happened in my life since; convocated, moved back to S'toon from ON., got hitched to an amazing girl at a lake that I used to spend a week or so every summer while I was growing up, moved into a new home that were really happy with... just needs a work shop! So for now I'll have to make due with a couple TV tray's in the spare room to finish this bird.

Here's a vid that I found to get the motivation level back where it needs to be.

First Time Running...

Epoxied the cowl to the fuselage with some West Systems and installed the battery tray.

Strapped the wing on and mounted the motor. All the servo's, landing gear, etc. all work fine with no rubbing or binding... getting close

The drive system for the racer is anything but light with respect to the rest of the bird

There'll be no problems with getting the CG as shown on the plans... will probably have to move the battery out of the cowl where I currently have it strapped.
