Re: Sloping at Coronation

Yes Merv, the max speed I could get out of the Radian was 72 MPH (no balast). Things were shaking pretty badly too! I don't think it would handle too much more. We have sloped with a Radian, and a Radian Pro in sustained winds of 35km/h. Sustained flight of 1 hr 6 minutes.

I mounted my video camera inside the fuse of the Radian, with a remote lens mounted on top of the canopy. It only required 1/4 oz of weight @ the HS. Flew like a brick, but took gtreat video. You sure wanted to be careful while decending! The extra balast made her sing in a dive. LOL I didn't mount the GPS on that flight! It weighted enough!!!!

Yes, it is a little bit on the small side, sometimes in head wind it tail wags which is an indication of undersize fin/rudder.

Do you find the Eze Glider short on rudder authority? I am considering making a larger rudder for it. Just too sluggish for my liking on the slope! Ailerons are ok & elevator is good.

Easy glider, completely different glider, I fly both all the time, with a little weight, Easy penetrates very well, I also flew it on a slope past 50km/h winds, that is my all around, do anything glider. Radian is excellent at floating, at that, it is almost unbeatable but at a price of very little penetration ability. The Radian Pro is much like Easy but structurally much weaker.

I do believe that What Tree clocked his Radian in the 70 MPH range in a dive with on board GPS!
Check with him.

I have an Easy Glider with the power taken out that slopes very nicely in 50 to 70 KMH winds ( conditions present at the time the pictures were taken). That's the one in the first post on this thread & has a wing very similar to the radian, just a little flatter!

I would guess Radian, in full dive, could not muster 40mph
By the way, once you try sloping, it is a rush. Unfortunately I do not have any decent hills in my area.

Copilot, look at some of the vids Dan posted here:

I had to google some of them as I thought they were powered lol. So much for peaceful soaring. I don't think our radains would be up for the task, I think they would melt at anything past 100mph .

Thanks Dan. I was just wondering. I learn something new every day. Al

Re: Sloping at Coronation

Sloping gliders usually fly in higher winds and close to the slope. That requires an agile glider, usually with ailerons to be able to make quick turns and handle wind gusts that can push you into the slope, plus it has to be able to penetrate. Non of this is Radian. The wing is designed for self stability, low wind, slow cruising, not the slope.

Re: Sloping at Coronation

I was watching the flying at Mission vids. and have a dumb guestion. I'm new at this gliding and notice that not one glider had a wing like the Radian. Is there a reason for this? I personly like the shape and performance of this wing. It is so much easier for my old eyes to see and know which way it is headed. Just wondered if there is a larger glider with the same wing? Also thanks for the great vid. I never seen flying like that. Thanks. Al
