Mike - with respect to stats they only reported what people wrote down on the registration sheet when they signed in. So the sheet asked "type of radio" and people would have written down Futaba, JR, Spectrum, Hitec etc and in most cases the model. You can see the actual data on the IMAC Worlds site - imacworlds.com under the contest results menu there is a subitem re pilot data.

Re: Transmitter Radio

might have been said already but make sure whatever you buy feels good and comfortable in your hands. Could be the most expensive controller in the world but if you don't like how it feels in your hands then it's still not the best choice for you

What is your preference as far as the brand of Radio?
Spektrum, Futaba, or Walkera or ???
I prefer any radio that demonstrates good quality, reliability, availability and cost.

That would make my preferred radio as Spektrum, JR, Futaba, Hitec, Jeti etc..

Like others said here, this is a loaded question. All the above are great radios. Pick one that you like. You wont go wrong

Re: Transmitter Radio

well it is true, need to know 3 or 4 settings for the DSMX module to work. I run one myself for a few BNF craft. But once you know the settings it is a 10 second affair.

Maybe if someone set up a repository of model-match models for folks to copy&paste online for all the Horizon Hobby aircraft, it would be even easier for newbies to grab&fly with Frsky than with a Spektrum radio. I might look into proposing such an idea at teh OpenTX forums. Not hard to do. Takes maybe 2 minutes to build a model, which would include all the DSMX settings, channels matched up etc. Then the newbies just chooses like 'TREX 550 DSMX' copy& paste from online. Then fly.

Already folks have uploaded hundred of ready-to-fly model programs on a couple websites:

I think it comes to the experience of the people setting it up. I am sure it would be no problem for myself, my friend who is very competent and been in the hobby for years, it took him 2 hours to setup his 130X. He did get it, however coming from Spektrum transmitters, a number of terms people are used to don't seem to be in OpenTX. The functions are all there, when you find them they make sense, it is just overcoming the difference in terms. If someone is new to the hobby, buys a BNF model from Horizon hobby and tries to use the FrSky transmitter with a DSMX module, they will probably have quite a bit of trouble. For an experienced hobbiest, no issues...

I don't understand why folks think OpenTx is at all hard to program. I have used Spektrum, Jeti and Frsky and the FrSky was the easiest by far for me. Dx6i the most frustrating (DX8 pretty bad also, but many fixes make the DX9 / DX18 good) Though I came from using ER9x programming, which was also dead easy to use.

With Open TX, most folks only need to use the Mixing menu, which does all the main programming. Very simple and logical on the mixing menu. It just gets more complex using the half dozen other advanced menus, but most could get by not using them at all, and those advanced functions no easier to set up on any other radio anyways. Though custom functions menu is easy too, and very handy.

Especially since I can do it using the OpenTx PC application instead of tediously pressing buttons on the transmitter itself, or using a clumsy restricting wizard. Cut and paste model mixes from online forums. Completely open choices for ppm in/out to servos. Program my own spoken voice announcements so I don't have to look at my radio to get RSSI, flight mode, battery level, altitude, etc.

and actually now the Frsky Taranis can do 32 channels, so I hear. I only need about 12 I think.

I had the Jeti DS16. fantastic mechanical on that thing, second to none. But the programming and capability very limited compared to the Taranis for my purposes.

As stated, very useful feature for certain types of flying. Is included in the Graupner line also.
