The Germans have developed a special adhesive for hobby materials (balsa, plastic, hardwood, plywood, film, metal, Depron etc.). Is incredibly good.

Re: can you use a hot glue gun for building with foam?

All my foam planes are built with hot glue with a bit of CA. Use the small gun with the 1/4 in. sticks. Mine has hi and lo heat. mostly I use low. The guns with the big sticks are useless, as they do run to hot. No need to touch the nose of the gun to the foam. I put the nose perpendicular to the foam and put on a thin line. You don't need much. I can build a 30 in. plane with two sticks. Each stick weighs 4 grams. The glue is stronger than the foam so there's no chance of it coming apart. The hinges are also hot glue.

Check the Foam Glue from Ontario Adesives, Its Great stuff !, I have also have used Gorilla glue and it works as well ... although you have to clamp/tape the pieces together to keep the joint from separating from the expansion of the glue... benefit : Really Strong and light

Re: can you use a hot glue gun for building with foam?

i did try the spit method when i was building a it recently (balsa) and it worked ok but not as well as the kicker. I have ordered some zap foam safe glue and kicker so we'll give that a go and see how we make out.

Instead of buying kicker, I'll just spray a light mist of water.

Spit works too!

Geoff:

It is possible to use hot melt glue to assemble a foam aircraft, however, you must use the low temp stuff. I too struggle to make foam safe ca work properly (for me), in particular the E-Flight product. Even after I hit the stuff with E-Flight brand kicker, it still does not want to set. Recently I purchased ZAP foam safe ca and kicker in the hope that I will have better luck. CA is the way to go, if at all possible, to keep weight down.

You can sheet foam core wings with latex based contact cement. I have been doing it for years and it does not melt the foam. You can get it at Home Depot or Rona or CTC even. Its made by Lepages and the can is green/yellow.
DON'T use the red/yellow can as that is solvent based and will eat the foam.

The stuff I have is called ZAP "foam safe kicker" and with that it works just like normal CA does on balsa you just put the CA on one side and spray the kicker on the other side and stick them together, just reading the bottle and it says "forces most CAs to cure in 10 seconds or less" grab a bottle of that and you should be good to go,

Hope that helps you

I actually read just about word for word this procedure in a foam airplane manual . The one thing it did also say was be careful with the kicker and not apply to much as it could have the tendency to eat the foam too. I thoughhr someone on here said something about gorilla glue being good. I wouldn't have a problem with epoxy except its drying time. Would be alright if it just glued items together without them needed to be held in place

I would say this is a good idea, get some of the Kicker and give it a try.
