Re: How Much Battery

Hi,
Hobby King sells a great 2500 mah Nimd battery for about a dollar. They come ready to use and self discharge only 5 % in one year I made up a few 4 cell packs but I haven't used them yet so I can't tell you how they last but I would trust them for at least a few full days of flying.

I also just checked on the Li-Fe option, looks as though the Chinese are not going to get that business from me. I have to agree on the HXT900 for a throttle servo, I was sort of thinking that it's a bad idea to use it, bad place to save $6 too.
Hi Russ, yeah that's the one. I used the factory setting for voltage output, but it can be changed if you buy the interlink that they sell. I was looking for a more constant voltage out than what the nicads can supply. My Revolver has 5 servos, just the S3003 Futabas. I had the lipo from another project, so I just needed the voltage regulator. I also like the idea of the lipo and voltage regulator being a bit lighter than the battery and some lead to make the airplane balance.

Hobbyking's price is pretty much the same as Great Hobbies. So that's definitely one thing I won't be ordering from HK.

Re: How Much Battery

Another important consideration when selecting a battery is ensuring the aicraft's CG is correct. Sometimes a heavier or lighter battery alleviates the need for sticking lead in the nose or tail.

hey russ
you dont need i lipo in tha plane lol
just go get some nicads from the store and wire them up
you should get 4 or 5 flights off them
its only a 20 size plane

Re: How Much Battery

I have older high end JR analog servos 4721 / 4131 etc and I have found that they don't always like 6.6v on the LiFe batteries, so I step the voltage down to 5.5v with a regulator. Digital servo's would be no problem at 6.6v.

Back in the 80/90's most of my receiver packs were 500mah 4cell nicd and I would get 5 flights with standard analog servos (4 total). With todays digital amp hungry servos you would want more capacity.

I love the LiFe batteries, and make up both 1100 and 2300 mah 2 cell packs for all my planes and ignitions.

Not really, a 5 cell niimh is nominally 6v but fully charged is 7. The nominal voltage of a 2S li-fe is 6.6v but fully charged is 7v. If your electronics are rated for 6v it really means that they can handle a fully charged 5 cell nimh which is 7v fully charged, the same as a fully charge li-fe.

A 2S lipo on the other hand is nominally rated for 7.2v but is actually 8.4v when fully charged, too much for most servos unless they are rated for it.
