Re: Evolution trainer .455 prop selection

True but less chance of dead stick. And less clean up. I'll let it sit for a bit, then repair it, then go from there. No rush to change anything I have lots of others to fly. And this one gets a flight every two to three months so I have time to think on it.

Not sure that the power source change will improve your depth perception! But yes if you fly in a tight spot there is always a greater chance of loosing power with an engine.

Re: Evolution trainer .455 prop selection

Thanks Mervin, well the flight with the 12.25x3.75 did not go so well. Yes the prop worked fine. But shortly after take off I had a dead stick I had not quite made it down to the end of my driveway to my runway so trying to miss the power line I miss judged where the plane was and put it in the trees. The only damage is one outer wing rib very repairable but I think I'm throwing in the towel on nitros and gas. Going to convert the twist to electric. Seems I have no trouble keeping my electrics flying with no damage.

It sounds like you are into hanging this plane on the prop so the 12.25 x 3.75 would be an excellent choice. 12 x 4 or 11.5 x 4 would be in the same ball park too if you can't find one.

More than likely nothing, it was one of the motors in the lot I picked up. I adjusted the valves and made sure it was all good but it has low compression. I don't fly many nitros so going through the hassle of finding parts to refresh it is not on my list.

What were you planning to do with the 61?

Re: Evolution trainer .455 prop selection

You bet Gary, the twist has tons of ground clearance, I pulled a well used os fs 61 off that ran a 12x6 with no issues of ground clearance. I think I've even had a 13x6 on it at one point. I'm going to try the 12.25x3.75 and see how it does.

Re: Evolution trainer .455 prop selection

That Alpha Trainer looks a virtual copy of the 46 NT, (although they list that as their 40). Perhaps this is the new version?

I should have mentioned on any of the NT's I threw away the large 219A weight and went with the more conventional drive washer. That was the one that would deform.

NOTE: Different makes of the same spec prop will perform differently so that an 11/6 from APC may work better than a wood prop of the same numbers. I can say the APC 12.25 x 3.75 was one we used specifically for prop hanging and verticals as it could not break mach in cruise with that pitch. The problem is that larger diameter reduces your ground clearance so make note of that. Much greater risk of eating grass or perhaps damage sucking up rocks or other debris.

Re: Evolution trainer .455 prop selection

I'm looking more for stump pulling that weed whacking. The 11x5 has plenty of speed, just not needed for how I fly this plane it's my Sunday fly plane, not great at anything but good enough. Just makes me smile is all!! I'll try a couple of what I have and see what I'm happy with. Thanks all.

Yup that's her.......the big crank weight is a dead give away.

I am using mine on a Spad combat plane. I'm using a 10x5 MAS on it and it loves the RPMs and to scream.
