Buddy boxing with P-link (JR/Spektrum) or whatever Futaba calls it has been a godsend to heli instructors. In the old days I used to have to match the students buddy box TX to match the master TX. Total pain in the butt. Now, I just set up the master TX for P-Link trainer mode, plug in the slave RX and go fly with the student. It works great when needed, but as I and others have mentioned here, most heli fliers are self-taught with me as an instructor making sure the heli(and radio) has a good setup for the student, and then coaching the student between flights.

Yes it is. 3D is post stall flight. That includes VPP like the Raven, but VPP is only a small percentage of 3D RC aircraft and manuevers.

The Twin Otter can pull reverse in the air too, so I guess it is the original 3D full scale by your definition!

I would recommend the club purchase a Futaba transmitter to serve as the club buddy box. All you need is a cheap 6 channel. Plenty of cheap used ones here on RCC. I have trained approximately 6 guys to fly in the past year and that's what I did.

Re: How Does your club handle?

I have said it before and I will say it again: their are inherent risks when you do anything....whether you are playing a video game, playing catch with hand grenades or learning how to operate a R/C heli. As far as I am concerned, if you choose to go to a flying field...then you choose to accept the consequences should something unfortunate happen. The MAAC warning signs come to mind. It would be great if he could learn to fly heli's with zero risk to anything or anybody but life doesn't work that way.

It is obvious that this fellow is serious about learing how to fly as he threw down some serious Deniro's to buy the heli. I would hope that the other club members chip in and help him out wherever they can before he tries to fly the heli...whether it be with the setup or coaching him while he is trying to hover.

You should check out some videos of Kirby Chambliss and his new routines. 3D is becoming scale.
High alpha for what 20 seconds is not 3D. The only true 3D capable full size was the turboprop Raven. Ended when the engine flamed out during a steep approach with reverse pitch and Handley pancaked it on the runway.

Since nobody in the club feels up to the challenge of buddy boxing said new guy, he has no choice but to try and fly the heli on his own. I would be more concerned about the setup of the heli rather than his piloting skills.....example...is his head speed too high.....or are his cyclic controls reversed...etc. This is where the other heli flyers in the club come in....to help setup the machine to the best of their abilities.

Their is no "magic pill". You just have to do what you can and hope for the best.
