Re: Build: Dave Anderson 1/3 scale Howard Pete

Hey angrymutt. I need to get back to this build.
Too many other things dominating my time right now.
Maybe in a couple weeks.
I'd like to maiden her this summer.

Re: Build: Dave Anderson 1/3 scale Howard Pete

Finally had some spare time to do some work on this girl.
Finished the metal work on the gear. Cut the axles to length and drilled a 1/8" hole in each end for the cotter pins which keep the piano wire inside the brass tube axles in place. It's a very interesting design.
Laid the 1/4" by 1/4" balsa crutch and started adding formers.
Epoxied the the landing gear to the appropriate formers and added the front stringers.
Next I'll finish the bottom formers and stringer and then flip the whole mess over and start on the top.
Hope to put a little time every week now into this and start seeing regular progress.

Next step is to enclose the gear in balsa and ply to create the fairing.
I can why this is all done prior to building the fuselage.
One of the first steps in building the fuse is attaching the gear to the bulkheads.
Trying to solder and build fairing with a clunky airplane body attached would be a pain.
The fairings are built with 1/16 ply forms and balsa sanded to shape that encases the wire.
I've laser cut the ply formers and will assemble the fairing next.

Now to soldering.
I apply flux fairly liberally over the entire joint working it into the wrapping.
I run the torch at about its medium setting.
So the flame isn't too big.
At no time do I let the metal get any kind of glow.
I heat up both sides and the bottom mostly, keeping the torch moving constantly.
I touch/tap the solder to the top of the joint waiting to see it melt.
Once i see it start to melt when it touches I continue to apply the solder to the top of the joint mostly letting it flow into the joint. I touch it a little to the sides to make sure I get good coverage.
Once it looks like it has a good load of solder I take the heat away and let it cool.
Looks dirty at first but clean up with a wire brush and it looks pretty good.

Soldering has never been a favorite task for me.
I get the job done but it never looks like the pictures on some of the builds I've seen by guys much more experienced than me.
Luckily the Pete's gear is wrapped in lots of balsa and ply so the ugly joints will be hidden.
I use acid flux with solid silver bearing solder.
For heat I use a Ronson butane torch.
First I use a piece of fie sandpaper and clean up any of the surfaces that are to be joined. Just sanded enough to remove the sheen from the manufacturing process. Then a quick wash with soap and water to remove any grease and oil.
Then position the pieces in their appropriate place with clamps and wire to ensure the spacing is correct.
Then wrapped the joints tightly with silver coated wire.
Place the washers called for by the plans and a piece of balsa to keep everything at 90 degrees.

Re: Build: Dave Anderson 1/3 scale Howard Pete

The Landing gear is made from bending 3/16 piano wire.
Not the easiest to bend y hand. The plan was to try my K&S bender and if that wasn't sufficient then use the annealing and hardening process.
Luckily it worked without annealing. Although not easily.
My old rusty vice in the barn is on a heavy steel bench. So I can put a lot of pressure on the lever without worrying about the bench moving or the vice slipping.
Cut the section out of the plans that has the template, grabbed a bunch of 3/16 wire and away I went.
It took me two tries on each to get what I consider a good result. Not perfect but probably 99%.
Now to solder. I need to find some good copper wire to do the wrapping.
The next step is to create a jig to hold the two wires at the correct distance while soldering.
This is the inside distance between F6 and F10. I marked this on some scrap balsa and CA'd some pieces to hold the gear in place while I solder.
Later this week I'll get the copper wire, make a jig for the bottom ends of the gear and get the soldering done.

Re: Build: Dave Anderson 1/3 scale Howard Pete

All the fuse formers cut now.
Decided to read the instructions. The next step before I can start gluing formers is to build the landing gear.
The wire portion at least as it is attached to one of the formers and listed as the first to be glued.
So I picked up the piano wire and brass tube required.
Off I go to bend and solder.

Re: Build: Dave Anderson 1/3 scale Howard Pete

The Fuse is assembled upside down on a 1/4 square balsa crutch.
Using a basic balsa stripper I've stripped a number of 1/4 square pieces from my box of offcuts.
My longest strip being 36" I'll still need to splice a couple pieces to have a couple lengths long enough for the sides.
Once I've done the splicing I'll assemble the crutch on the plans and begin attaching the formers. pics to follow shortly.
