Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

Sounds to me that you are partially loosing one phase on the motor. If it was lost completely the motor would just sit there & squeal. Sounds like it is partly there ( low voltage on one of the three wires not zero voltage) caused most likely by a poor solder joint, rusty plug and socket or a faulty ESC that is not supplying equal power to all 3 legs. This WILL cause overheating big time! Regardless of prop size.

Yeah, the 5x2.5 prop drops down quite a bit, but the 6x3 is much better.

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

As I mentioned earlier, too long a mounting screw(s) could have impacted, damaged and/or shorted the windings. Otherwise an improper ESC/motor match or a faulty component.

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

Thanks for all the advice and guidance. I tried it last night with a 5x4.5 prop and no issues.
It sure didn't seem to have anywhere near the power as it did when I first tried it out though, and seems to me the motor still gets too hot too quickly. The can was 100 F and the shaft (measured at the rear bearing) was 130 F after a 3/4 throttle run of only a few seconds (maybe 10-15 secs).

I think there is something wrong with the motor - but what goes wrong on a brushless other than the bearings (which feel and sound good, BTW)?

New power system (eflite 6 series 2700kv, castle ICE 50amp esc) and a wattmeter should be here by early next week.

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

He has different props as mentioned, so give it a try first before forking out $20 for a new ESC. Diagnose and eliminate instead of just swapping out parts hoping for the best.

Its pretty obvious it had too much prop, back it down a bit and see how it is then.

I have had an outrunner/ESC combination that did the same thing. The squeal is NOT the bearings it is the magnetic field slip..

No matter how I messed with the ESC it did not resolve the issue & replacing it eventually solved the problem. Sometimes they just cant sense the current properly and they lose sync.

For the low cost of ESCs from Hobbyking.com, rcwarez.com, or you can even get a low priced one on RCCanada, it isn't worth dicking around...

uh oh! do I need a programming card for this esc? the instructions for changing the timing are included with it and it doesn't say anything about a programming card, just stick movements
No, but it is nice to have. You can use the stick method.

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

I did a trial run on Ecalc for the prop, use a 6x3 or a 7x3 if you have room.

Type in your battery, esc amp, and motor. Yours are all in the lists. Then you choose the apc electric e prop, and spec a size.
Your best to use a 6x3 or 7x3, a 5x3 will drop you down too much maybe.

Put on a lesser prop, 6c3, 5x5, etc.
thanks, I do have some lesser props and will try those.
