Of course, the CC Esc may have been defective. Just suggesting wise to check prop size with a wattmeter.
Do not run any motor/esc combo for more than few seconds while testing. There is no air moving past to cool anything in most cases. flytwice
Thanks for the info. The prop is a APC 13x6.5. I ran it today with a watt meter, and it peaked at 900 watts and a peak of 57 amps. I can't remember what the voltage was, but it started around 16.

I did the run without the cowl, so there was some prop wash over the electrics. The recommended ESC was supposed to be the E-flite 60 amp pro version. I'm glad I went up in size.

I really wish the data logging had worked on the old ESC, would have been neat to see its final seconds.

Re: I saw the magic smoke...

I just received my replacement ESC. I think I'll run the airplane on the ground for a little while, just to see.

Great customer service by Hobbyhobby, and Castle Creations.

Take care, Daren

Man that sucks. It looks pooched. One of your transistors on the ESC's must have been stuck. POOF! See ya!

I saw the magic smoke...

First flight of my new E-flite Extra 32 yesterday. E-flite power 32, CC ice 75, 4S 3300mah battery. I suck at maidens so I asked a fellow member to do the honors, while recorded it. Not even one circuit, and it comes down the field with the prop free-wheeling, but still in control. He landed it off the runway (just), thank goodness for the previous nights rains. When we get to the plane, I take off the cockpit hatch, and the airplane is SMOKING!!! I quick yank out the battery, figuring its fried, and its cool to the touch. We get the airplane back to the setup area, after collecting another off field airplane, and the ESC in my plane is still hot.

I get the airplane home, and this is what I discover.

Thankfully no damage to the plane, and the ESC will be replaced under warranty. This isn't one of the ESC's that are on the recall list. We did try to recover the data from the ESC, but it looks like its toast.
