Re: Sheeted Foam Wing Repair

No, you stay away from the CA because standard CA will eat the foam. Foam safe will work, but not as good a bond as epoxy, white glue, foam safe contact cement, or polyurethane glue.

I prefer the polyurethane glue myself. It works nicely and will expand fingers into the foam for a very solid bond. Wipe the foam with a damp cloth or give it a light spritz of water and apply the glue to the backside of the wood. Get it all stuck in place and then weight the heck out of it. Put a piece of plastic over the wood and then stack magazines on top. This will allow the weight to take the shape of the wing.

Once you've got it all glued down (24 hours), a good sanding and you`re ready to recover.

For any repairs like this I use Superphatic and white Gorilla Glue(very sparingly). Works really well to hold the balsa together and to the foam.....

Thanks Bob. That's a big help.
I assume you recommend to stay away from CA beacause it's more brittle and less forgiving, right?

Your suggestions are appreciated.

An angular cut on the sheeting usually about a 30 degree angle. Stagger the joints kind of like doing a wood floor. By doing this, you eliminate a butt joint that will create a bending failure. It also gives the wood itself more surface area to glue to in relation to the sheet next to it.

Excuse the crude drawing, but here is a basic idea. A bit more work, but much stronger joint in the end.

Re: Sheeted Foam Wing Repair

More or less. You want to scarf the joints so as not to create a stress riser. Also, you want to avoid CA. Use a good epoxy or polyurethane glue. Is the foam damaged? That would need to be replaced. You mention a 1 foot square section, so this might involve spars or leading edge as well?

As I said, it will be easier to help once I could see some pictures. Done lots of these kinds of repairs, but each one has it's own 'quirks'.

Re: Sheeted Foam Wing Repair

Unfortunately I'm not in town so that isn't possible right now, but does the method I described sound like I'm in the right direction?

Thanks

Repairing it isn't really that hard, but a few pictures of the damage would help in figuring out a starting point.

Sheeted Foam Wing Repair

I've got a 35% Jtech with some damage and looking for advice on repairing the skin. Basically it looks like I need to replace a section about 1 foot by 1 foot on the bottom of the wing. I'm more concerned with structural integrity than anything since I fly IMAC with it and it needs to handle some high stress maneuvers. My thought was to fit a new sheet in place and glue it in with CA, but I've never repaired a sheeted foam core wing before.

Anyone ever done this?
