Having a blast with the little racers. 2 weekends in a row I've been out flying now. The Q500 is running great, about 19,500rpm on the ground and probably about a 160mph flight and I flew the Miss Ashley today with a 22,000rpm ground peak and a couple of 200+mph passes. Engine for the GR7 is on the way now from Jett, ordered an FAI engine set up for formula one with open exhaust. Loving these birds. The jet speeds without some of the hassles of the jets!
And yes, flying in T shirts in late February/early March. It was 16C today with no wind!!!

A couple more, note the Maloney, that would date these pictures to the late 70's. Back when a .60 was a huge engine!
I sent that picture of the Kadet to my dad and he believes it was Gary Alison's airplane as well. I have a couple of memories of that specific Kadet. The first one was at a float fly, probably half moon bay at Sylvan Lake I think. I was standing on the end of the dock where I was allowed to be when I heard a bunch of people yelling at me "DUCK DUCK DUCK". Well, I was all of 3 years old, I start looking for, you guessed it, a Duck...... That exact Kadet was deadstick and heading straight for me. The floats literally bounced off my head knocking me off the dock.
I still have a plaque that my dad made for me with a little yellow three bladed propellor that says "A Kadet bounced off his noggin, now he's thinkin of joggin" hahaha.
Another memory I have is of Gary putting the airplane into a shallow turn with trim, laying down on the grass, and then nodding off. When he woke up the airplane was nowhere to be found but a few people had noticed it go down in the field to the left of the runway and woke him up haha. I remember a party of us wandering out to search for the airplane. Again I was only maybe 4 years old and after wandering a few hundred yards into the tall grass, prickle bushes and moquito's I was tired of it and started heading back. On my way back I nearly stepped on the airplane! I felt so proud to have found the airplane.
I believe that particular airplane met it's demise when Gary hooked up rockets on the wings to fire simultaniously at one point. Guess MAAC didn't prohibit that back in the early 80's, who knows. Anyway, seemed like a good idea until one of the rockets fired, but didn't leave the airplane putting it into a spiral that only ended when it hit the ground.
Ahhh yes, the good old days, the Kadet to the head probably explains a few things about me today!

Jeremy... Can't believe I didnt see this post days ago...Great read... I too was born in 77 and was brought up in a great racing community called the UPRC. I flew C/L at the NATS when I was 5 and was racing pylon when I was 8... Placed second in Q500 expert when I was 11 i think?! It was a strong group that everyone was friends... As our circuit slowly died, we were travelling further and further into the states to race. All of a sudden it became more serious... And less fun to some degree. Granted we didn't know everyone like we did in our circuit, but the small groups kept to themselves. Gone were the days of camping over night, bond fires, drinks and some story telling..... There isn't even a Canadian nats anymore. Competion is Hard to find these days (in ontario).
we have a small group that is trying to race Ef1s and were having fun doing it.
As far as the building thing... That is a dying art. Pros and cons to ARFs are, it brought people into the hobby that otherwise might not have tried to build, due to time and skills to build something that flys. The con, the generation of builders and pride,is getting smaller and smaller. I will always build because I enjoy that part of the hobby, and my son will also learn those skills, that a lot of children of today are lacking....
This hobby is the best thing to ever happen to me. My dad and his friends showed me from an early age, how fun it can be. These guys are still my close friends.
Yes we did lose Bill Brandow, and he was a passionet builder and racer. I have been there recently to see Rob and did buy a q40 that needs finishing.
Maybe in time we will see some more competition... as I sit in my workshop, building a Q500 with the hopes of one day racing again
Cheers all
