Re: Engine comparisons.

Rossco, Welcome to R/C Canada, and this great hobbie.

There is several different comparison charts out there. A lot will depend on the flight envelope the airframe is intended for. I imagine you question is based more towards trainers, sport / intermediate aircraft.

I attend many fun-fly events each year, and have done for many years. 2 Stroke, and 4 Stroke seam to work best up to 6-8lbs. Gas seams to work best 20cc (1.2cid) and larger. All the gassers I have seen smaller than 20cc, are disappointing.

Hope this might help.

Re: Engine comparisons.

Elecric motor sizing is still a bit of a mystery to me as every manufacturer seems to have their own system!

I have resorted to looking for a watt rating on the motor & 746 watts = 1 horse power. Most .40's now days are just over 1 hp.

I put an Eflight .25 on my .25 sized plane & just about tore the tail feathers off of it! Vertical unlimited, enought to hover at 2/3 throttle way more power than any .25 glow engine I have ever seen!

Hope that helps.

Hey Rossco,

I started the hobby about a year ago, and had the same question as you. What helped me get a rough idea was the different sites that sells kits. Usually under the specs they will list engine requirements, both 2 and 4 stroke equivalent. Also alot of times you get dimensions and flying weight. Helped me out a great deal.... Here is an example from Great Hobbies site..

Re: Engine comparisons.

For the more common engines, these are usually the equivalent 4 strokes:

45 2str = 70 FS
60 2Str = 90 FS

Generally, the 4 stroke displacement needs to be about 25-30% more (more or less..LOL)

Engine comparisons.

I'm new just getting into RC flying.
Engine size comparison seems mysterious to me. It appears air frames are rated as the size of nitro 2 stroke cu. in. engine it takes. (eg: an LT-40 takes a .40 cu. in. nitro engine). Is there a chart available giving the equivalent nitro 4 stroke, gas 2 stroke, gas 4 stroke or electric motors?
Also how reliable are the new small <20 cc gas engines?

Thanks;
Rossco
