Re: Fly or DIE! II

If the idle is not dropping could be an air leak in the carb causing that.

Re: Fly or DIE! II

OK Here I am again with this 'Project Plane'...

I took it out yesterday (30 June 2016) and fired it up!

Everything was working and the winds were light, so I taxied out and pushed the throttle forward. The Cap lifted off nicely!

I had two GREAT flights with no problems.

Then I had a THIRD flight...
The engine was working fine, but the Cap was just getting a little 'Sloppy' so I decided to bring it in early... it took three passes to get the Cap to slow down enough and then it still was acting odd... I ended up landing heavy, broke the prop and Splayed the landing gear... no other visible damage.

In the shop I found that the right Ailerion was held in place by a single hinge and the control rod... not good.

I repaired the LG, glued the hinges in (Gorilla glue), replaced the prop and checked the batteries (no problems).

So I'm planning on checking out the engine a bit more before I try to take it up again... I still don't know why it wasn't slowing down... It was idling nicely at 1.8K before the flight...

Does anyone have any ideas as to why the idle would pick up??

OK Guys;

The saga continues, albeit slowly.

I have got the motor box repaired and the engine mounted (again)

As always the repair is not as pretty as we might like - but it will work.

I still have to reinstall all of the fuel lines and electronics as well as rebalance etc - but I'm getting there.

Re: Fly or DIE! II

Well It's not finished... But I have begun the restoration of the motor mount on my Cap 232.

It is amazing just what you can do with the right tools. In this instance a power drill and my Dremel tool took out most of the damaged parts and then I smoothed it down a bit with a file.

Once done, I had to figure out how to replace the part that I removed...??

Photo #8 is the evolution of the piece of the motor mount that I installed (poor photo) but Plastic coroplast is easier (and cheaper) to work with that Plywood and after some three prototypes I was happy with the fit and made a wood version - it still needed some filing - but not much. As we speak the glue is curing and I'm planning the next phase... it'll be ready for spring and then I'll have to RE-maiden the thing AGAIN!

Time will tell.

There won't be much left to fix after this repair, should be good as new! Hope to hear about the next flight sometime soon. Keep us posted.
Good luck

"Illegitimus non carborundum"
Loose "translation" Don't let the ba*d wear you down. You have come so far with this bird, and it's nearly building season anyway.

Re: Fly or DIE! II

Well here I go into the ‘NEXT CHAPTER’ of the CAP 232 Story…

I’m NOT Impressed.

I was flying the CAP a couple of weeks ago and having a really good time with it, I decided to do a Touch and Go – but as the CAP approached the field I realized that it was not slowing down enough!

I did a go around and tried several more times – same result… The engine just would NOT slow down to an idle!? I ended up forcing the plane down and hitting the Kill Switch, it cost me a prop but the plane was down with minimal damage. (I thought)

Once home I took a VERY close look at EVERYTHING and found the REAL problem.

The engine box was separated at the seams and the left side wall of the engine box had sheared off at the firewall! This allowed the engine to pull forward 1/8” on the left side which changed the throttle setting to a constant FAST Idle; so I could not slow the engine / plane.

The solution?

I have to cut the side of the engine box off and replace it with a piece of new plywood.

The problem?

The side of the motor mount goes from the Firewall, through the F1 former and back to the wing tube. This is going to get complicated, but at this point getting this bird airworthy is a point of personal pride.

Part II of the problem

The plywood used for the motor mount sides was only three ply (shame on the Kit maker for going so cheap). As I looked at the piece and where it broke I was taken aback by ‘How clean’ the break was… I am guessing that the torque of the engine worked on the poor quality wood until it snapped… The ‘Other Thing’ about the engine box is that the sides of the plywood were completely unbraced on the OUTSIDE of the F1, on the INSIDE of F1 there was Triangular stock at every joint!

Ah the joy of getting a bargain plane!

I am debating continuing with this ‘Repair’ or surrendering it to the ‘Fire Pit’.

Odds are - I’ll fix it out of shear Determination / Pride / Stupidity - because that darned thing is NOT going to beat me!

But I am getting pi$$ed; I could be spending this time on my ‘Other Project’ (AT6)

But… the CAP really flies nice, and I really am crazy…
