Re: Tips for parallel charging

I'll shout out for Buddy RC, too. Their parallel charging boards were revised a couple times since 2010, when they were the first to bring a good model to market - they know their stuff.

Check their offering: http://www.buddyrc.com/power-system/...rge-board.html

(seems like one is obliged to state their non-affiliation with any product endorsed... so - I don't have any connection to Buddy RC, except using their great paraboards!)

They have thermal fuses for the balance connectors, so that you shouldn't be able to burn anything out in those little traces. Watch the video, you'll be impressed.

Re: Tips for parallel charging

When you say EC5 is stamped on them . That is telling users the style of plug . Not a brand name. Same as Deans connectors .. THe originals were designed and made by Deans but subsequent cheap copies will fit but not made by Deans. In fact some of the copies were improved for better grip. Only thing, I try and stay away from HK ,are anything with electronic circuits in them and motors. Learned the hard and costly way. Looking back ; it was actually a cheap lesson .....no more. So many say it only cost me this amount but fail to include shipping.

I do assemble a lot of my own using north american supplied parts.

Agreed, I would say most everything is knocked off for them. Case in point, EC5 connectors, look the same, have EC5 stamped on them, work in relatively low amp conditions, push them and you will likely be sorry. Been there done that...

I have been playing around with electrics since the brushed motor/NiCad days and have put together/assembled systems for more than a few fellow modellers interested in getting into electrics. Nothing fancy just standard power systems for cars and boats and planes.

It usually goes something like this: I want to get into electrics or I have bought this electric stuff and can you help me get it all working. When the person has nothing sometimes I can guide him down the path of a little better quality items. Sometimes they are looking for the least expensive route and inadvertently it leads to Hobby Klunk. Other times they have already bought stuff and most likely have been talked into Hobby Klunk bits and pieces.

So I am quite familiar with the short comings and what some claim are advantages of using Hobby Klunk products.

At the moment I am designing a simple trainer for my young nephew age 6. I have an older Hitec Eclipse with 2.4 module and spare receiver/servos I have laying around. The motor, esc, batteries and charger will be Hobby Klunk most likely. The only thing I will need to purchase is the charger everything else I have sitting around. 30 bucks for a charger cheap introduction to the hobby.

Re: Tips for parallel charging

Charge leads, pigtails, connectors balance boards that I have bought at HK are exactly and I mean exactly the same as ones I have purchased at GH and other hobby shops.
HK is a 1/4 of the cost.

People seem to forget that alot of the stuff HobbyKing sells and what the other major suppliers sell come from the same factory and just badged.
I think its automatically assumed that if I pay big dollar for something its got to be superior but in todays market thats not always true.
Sorry for hijacking the thread.
No one jumping on Hobby Klunk it is what it is cheap stuff. When it fails to perform don't complain throw it out its not worth trying to send back or get a refund. The Klunk is tongue in cheek the sound it makes when it hits the bottom of the garbage can. Quite simply anything questionable or with an expected or anticipated failure rate having to do with charging or conditioning lipos in my opinion designates it to the Klunk part of Hobby Klunk.

I don't take chances when working with lipo's No Hobby Klunk chargers, pigtails, connectors, balance boards etc. Motors, servos other less critical components I have used and may well use in the future but when it comes to working with those highly condensed energy storage cells Hobby Klunk in my opinion just doesn't cut it.

I do not recommend parallel charging for newcomers because of this exact reason- You made a beginner mistake and look what happened. I very strongly suspect you plugged the packs incorrectly to the balance board. Either that or you got a bum balance board from HK- If you can, post a picture if the fried section of the board and show us which ports you were plugging into when the magic smoke was released. I can provide a batter analysis of the cause of you can. Also take a picture of the backside of the board showing which circuits were fried.

Some general rules to follow:
  • Make sure all packs to be balanced charged are within .1V of each other
  • Check and DOUBLE CHECK the negative balance lead of each pack before you plug it into the parallel charging board.
  • Check and DOUBLE CHECK the negative balance lead gets plugged INTO the negative post (pin 1) on the balance board. Do this for every pack you plug in.

I generally charge at the cumulative pack rating for the packs.
IE if I charge 3 2200's, I will charge at 6.6A (Assuming your charger can handle 6.6A)

You can also parallel charge multiple capacities.
IE- 2 2200's and one 1000 can be parallel charged at 5.4A. But again, I emphasize that parallel charging should be best left to people who have aquired a significant level of experience in Lipo charging.

Lately, I do a lot less parallel charging because I now use an app that tracks the battery condition by entering the charge capacity each time I charge and discharge a pack. So to get accurate charge data history, I need to charge each pack individually. Each pack has its own unique serial number and over time, I can glean a ton of info on the pack condition and how I run it to know the overall condition of the pack. I get around the multi charge by having more chargers, each charging one pack at a time...LOL. PS- 4 port chargers are great for this

By all means, keep asking questions. Its the only way to learn

The hobbyking parallel charging board is known to have burnt out problem. Luckly mine doesnt have that problem.... but they are known for having some defective ones

I've had the batteries for years so I doubt there is a problem with their connectors, and the board only allows the balance plugs to fit in one way. This wasn't the first time using this board either, so this is most likely my own error. In the photo, those are the lines that burnt. I checked the solder on the back and nothing seems amiss. Lastly, what app is it that you're using? Sounds like it would be a good idea.
You didn't happen to plug the balance plugs in before the power plug did you? Is there no fuses or anything on that board? Without safe technology some pretty strong currents can flow via the balance jacks if plugged in first.

Check out the Cellpro balance board in the video with safe technology you plug the balance plugs in wait a bit and if the battery needs to be charged by itself the strip lights up red saving you from the problem I believe you may have had.
