Love the look of Tundra wheels on a Cub, used old 10th scale buggy sand tires on my 40 size J-3

Glad to see you started your own thread on the nosewheel cub.

Re: AMR Piper J-3 Cub 33% Build Thread - BBKING

I started to look at the nose gear more closely and it turns out that it didn't have any steering mechanism built into it, did more research and found bigger image of that article i posted in earlier post. Reading through it, it states that "There is no steering on the nose gear and aircraft can easily turn with help from brakes and rudder!"

Hmmmm, getting interesting as I learn more about it. This mod was first developed back in 1941!. It's still in use to date on some airframes.....

So now what about the nose gear steering?, any ideas how to implement this or keep it scale with hopes that Rudder will push the tail with bit of power ups burps on the throttle....

Sorry Kev, don't thin ive hijacked ur thread here but this is something new to many of us on here and would like to share what i'm discovering about nose gears on J3 and PA11s....

Brad,

Did some research on this and found out that trike gear set up was first tried on J3 Cub and there is that article also, then PA 11 Super Cubs were also installed with tri wheel configuration. Piper then developed all new aircraft and designated as PA 20 Tri-Pacer, Pacer was bigger then J3 and PA 11 as both pilots sat side by side unlike in tandem configuration on J3 and PA 11.

I also found that Piper also made J5 Cub Cruiser aircraft prior to Tri Pacer and it also utilized tri wheel landing gear set up. So this set up has been in use for a very long time on few of Piper aircraft. Now all these aircrafts also have there taildragger variants also....

Its not a cub if its not a tailwheel IMO.

Taildraggers are inherently better then trike gear planes.

Here are couple pictures of PA 11 Super Cub with tricycle landing gear arrangement plus an article that it was originally tested on Piper J3 Cub.

After seeing video in above post, I'm starting to really like to do this mod on my BIG Cub soon....

Here is a video of Super Cub with trike landing gear set up, it was originally derived from J3 Cub.

a 50cc engine would be good for this plane

Kevin, if you want to do something different with your J-3 build, it doesn't get much more different than a J-3 with a nose wheel. I could supply you with the documentation.
Have fun guys,
Jon
I'm interested in exploring this option, you got a pm Jon...
