Re: Flag towing behind scale model aircraft....

Merv, glad you got to see it. I just got word our web site is now down for maintenance. Sammy, if you didn't get to see it before it went down, send me a PM, I have the file on my computer and can email it to you.

As you could see by the article, I just used a trainer with a .46 in it, and it did just fine. I have also used a high wing trainer (Aeromaster 60) with a clapped out old .60 in it and had no problems. My use of a stiffening rod at the leading edge of the flag allows you to fly faster, and have better control. Flying with just a weight on the bottom edge and towing from the top is what the parachutists do as well, but they don't have to maintain forward speed to remain in control. The parasol wing would be somewhat similar to a parachute, I suppose!

Good link Dave!

Ron Simonson our zone director a number of years back did the flag tow for one of our fun flies here. His aproach was quite simple, he towed from the top corner of the flag with a fishing wieght on the bottom corner directly below it.

He didn't have a release & had no problem on landing but we then have a very large field. The tow plane was a large parasol wing with a Chinese .80 4 stroke and it seemed to handle the job just fine. The flag looked to be about the same size as in the link provided.

I suspect that the key to the whole thing would be to have a plane capable of very slow flight (Ron's was)as the faster you went the more you would have difficulty getting the flag/banner to track right.

Flag towing behind scale model aircraft....

Has anyone on here done a flag towing or banner towing behind a Cub, Citabria, Cessna or giant Telemaster.....I like to know how it was done with success and how big was the flag or banner towed behind the model, plus how it effected with flight performance of the airplane...
