Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

Tried the drill and it worked fine. Something smaller than my Dewalt 18V would probably be easier. Definitely go fairly slow.
I did however redrill my dowel inserts and replace with cross grain plugs I made with a plug cutter. Using a dowel with grain running lengthwise makes for a very weak thread.

Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

I never, ever use hardwood for wing mounting blocks. Baltic Birch or aircraft grade ply only, drill and insert blind nuts, and epoxy the blind nuts to the wood. Never a failure, least not since I started doing that in 1990! I've seen too many hardwood blocks split and fail.

Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

The thing I do with the tap is something I learned from a machinist on a lathe. Put the tap into the drill but only lightly tightened in the chuck by hand. Get the drill squared up nice and steady and start it into the hole. When it starts to take some torque it will spin in the chuck. Stop the drill and remove it from the tap. Now you have started the tap in a few threads without wobbling around like can happen when trying to start by hand. Now you can finish is by hand and you won't have chunky threads from trying to start by hand.

Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

We have been doing it this way forever, it works. If one was to search hard enough I'm sure a reason to "Not do it" can be found for anything.

Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

A bit of research has revealed that tapping into a regular dowel (grain lengthwise) results in tapping into an end grain piece. Apparently not good.
So I need to either go with bolts for now or reninsert a crossgrain plug which I will need to make with a plugmaker.
Nothing is simple....

Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

At work I use a battery drill to drill and tap metal. It is quite easy once you get a feel for it.....Peter

Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

Thanks for the input. Going to try a couple practice runs with the drill and likely give it a try on the real thing.

Re: Drilling and tapping hard wood

I use a drill for hardwoods, and by hand for metals....just my $.02
