Re: heading hold VS rate gyro settings

Hey Andrew....

As a heli convert I can confirm your findings.... I am not sure why there is so much to do about being able to switch between rate and HH... After initial setup I set both gyro switch positions to HH mode to prevent switching it off.. I moved up to a stretched PROTOS carbon and have never even tried it in rate mode..

I was "thinking" through hard turns the other day and it amazed me how much rudder you use and how little "aileron". I think in the neat nose down stop and back turns you actually have to cross control with a little opposite aileron.. seams natural now but was intimidating at first for an old time plane guy...

I flew the copter a few times the other day and then put my little electric pattern ship up and it flew like crap...(pilot induced) because i was chopper turning.... go figure... im converted!

Re: heading hold VS rate gyro settings

I was just out flying a few days ago.

I was thinking, after a summer of flying the Radikal and Trex 500 ESP, now both with the heading hold gyro's (no rate mode set up anymore) I guess I see why no one flies the rate mode any more...

I am old(ish) and set in my ways... but I completely understand the benefits of the new HH gyros now. Just took me a few months to adjust.. lol.

You can teach an old dog new tricks!

Re: heading hold VS rate gyro settings

Well, I am starting to like the HH mode after all. I had to turn the gain way down on the 770 gyro on my Trex, but it seems to be OK now and stopped wagging the tail in aggressive flying.

I have the Radikal flying well with HH and the Spartan 760. But the gain is much higher than I have the JR 770 set at.

I guess you have to fly and try - to find the settings.

Re: heading hold VS rate gyro settings

Tried to fly with the heading hold today... started at 80%, dropped to 75, 70, then down to 60% and when I would punch the throttle/collective to fly around at high speed the tail would hunt.

On my 12X and with the JR gyro, tail lock is from 52% up, and I just went back to the 30% setting (which is back to rate mode) and flew around fine.

I want to try and learn to use the HH mode but I am getting near the lowest setting, is it normal to be down just above the 51/52% threshold?

AJC

ps with tail lock on, I still had no issue flyign around, I fly the tail regardless. I did find hovering much easier. Tail didnt move at all.

Don't forget there is a gain adjustment that dictates the amount of holding power the gyro gives the tail servo - regardless of rate or HH mode.

If you reduce the gain setting you will start to see the tail begin to follow you around. At higher gain settings, it would be difficult to tell which mode you are flying, especially if you're not aggressive with the sticks.

NO WAY would the heli fly with just cyclic inputs... AJC
Andrew,

The amount of rudder needed through a turn in your old Concept, with a mechanical yaw rate gyro, was a LOT less (as it is also in yaw rate mode with any modern gyro) then you will find will be required doing a turn in Heading Hold.

In fact, if you want to turn in yaw rate you can using cylic without using much rudder as the tail fin will cause the tail to follow the canopy's flight path.

In HH, the gyro will hold the heading constant while the cyclic will simply roll the heli, and no turn will result....just a roll.

For us older flyers who flew for many years using only yaw rate gyros, it can be a little intimidating to turn, as initially it would simply result do a BAD roll to knife edge and a bail out.

So initially, when turning in HH, I recommend more gentle turns and be prepared to feed in the amount of rudder to change just the amount of heading required.

For a technical understanding of the differences in how they work and set-up, check out this article on our web site:

Whoops… to clarify- when I mentioned both methods I was referring to HH set-up when using GY401’s. Lengthy Rate process of finding the servo sweet spot on the boom to give the required pitch for a decent no drift hover or just clamping down the servo with the tail blades at zero pitch, set the limit for no bind and let the 401 do its thing. That’s what I meant by both methods, although Futaba recommends the 1st method, which in theory should produce better results. My flying skills are not at the level to notice any difference setting it up either way.

Endpoints- usually reducing the left turn endpoint will even out the piro rate some. Doesn’t seem to stop the pin wheeling on a 401 if more than a couple of piro’s are done consecutively.

For me its been HH from day one. May give Rate a go one of these days. The weathervaning sounds like fun… no rudder inputs.

Might add, flew my first plane last month (GP Cub 40) after a 10 year layoff… I was on the rudder steady (whether it needed it or not) Weird!

AJCoholic…. Re: well, I am officially a heli pilot again

Congrats! Sounds like your first flight back was a great success. Nice to be back in the saddle eh?
I have a couple of Trex 500’s in my hangar. Nice smooth flying bird for sure.

Happy Flying…

Re: heading hold VS rate gyro settings

Hey Andrew,

Just got back into choppers after a 20 year layoff - Struggled with a shuttle and an old mechanical rate gyro way back....never really had sucess.... The new gyros are amazing... I fly heading hold all the time with a 450 clone. It does keep you honest and force you to fly the tail but it comes quickly and is not that hard to master... I did switch to rate mode a few flights ago and it does pretty up the turns and make for more scale like smooth flight but the transition back to hover with it still in rate mode was scary and I had a Shuttle flashback.... Just an observation from someone in a similar situation!!!

PS turbine heli is a possible thing in a few years... maybe The Wren 44 BErgen machine looks interesting...
