Re: Drone Owners Will Now Have to Register With the US Government Well in the town I live in you often see high end cars such as Lamborginis driving around with "N" on them, so you know Mommy and Daddy will be buying those brats high end Drones too. I'm not rich it just happens I live in a town where rich Asians that immigrated here thought would be a good place to hang their hats. |

Re: Drone Owners Will Now Have to Register With the US Government The drone issue here and probably all over North America will get interesting after Christmas is over. |

Re: Drone Owners Will Now Have to Register With the US Government It's worth noting that contrary to the media, Drone has a very specific meaning when applied to UAV's. A drone is a self-directed UAV, ie it has the ability to fly itself as a normal mode of operation (This exempts return-to-home failsafes). So those GPS-directed quads are drones but our more typical piloted quads and pretty much all FPV stuff isn't. I do think that a lot of the blame for this can be safely laid on the UrbEx guys. For those who don't know, UrbEx or Urban Exploration is a photography subculture dedicated to the exploration of urban environments, especially abandoned ones. Ignoring basic safety procedures and little things like anti-trespassing laws are a stable of UrbEx behaviour. These guys have also got into GPS-guided camera-equipped drones in a serious way and needless to say are ignoring good sense in their activities there as well. Personally, I'm all for drone registration. I'm also against the registration of small UAV's used for hobby purposes at LOS distances. There's a major safety difference between self-directed and fully ground controlled UAV's that the regulations must understand. |

Re: Drone Owners Will Now Have to Register With the US Government My favorite hobby shop is in the US a short drive away. I have a USPS mail box and a mail drop for larger items and items that need a signature so I am over at least once a week. I take a few models and fly at a local club as a way to pass the time during rush hour. 5 bucks US is nothing I will be signing up as soon as I can and its not worth the effort to get the refund. Re: Drone Owners Will Now Have to Register With the US Government That is correct, only US citizens can register. Foriegners have to pony up the $5 to get the FAA number to put inside our aircraft. The certificate we get is only a "recognition of ownership" for the models. We can then apply to the FAA for a refund of our $5 after the fact because we are not allowed to "register". The IFR made it sound like all this is a "must & shall" while the FAQ's had a hint of "should & can". We may have to wait untill the dust settles to know for sure. |
