Re: Which balancing charger would you recommend from a GTA hobby shop?

Follow-up. I tried soldering a shunt around the fried lead on the circuit board, connecting the two pins involved.

That's when I found that I'd also was the proud owner of a fried fuse. Decided that instead of trying to put in a fuse holder, I'd solder a wire to replace the fuse.

Turned out this definitely let the magic smoke out because another lead popped from the second shunt touching another pin with bare wire.

Turns out that I've reached the end of my skills in soldering a modern circuit board, plus a fried finger tip (touched the soldering iron). Any repairs would now cost me more that the charger cost me and no one else carries the same charger, so it went into the dustbin and garbage-garbage collection is this week.

Got two working chargers so putting time, effort and money into this lame duck is a non-starter. Just have to solder up a connector for the 3s battery pack that I'll be using with my 2212/6 motors on the planes currently under construction.

Thanks, Brent.

I did a quick review of the video (skimmed it without getting a lot of the details), and decided to take another look at the inside.

The fuse in my charger is located beside the switch but is hard-soldered vertgically rather than in a clip.

One thing that I definitely noticed is that the lead that goes to the corner of the larger transformer is discoloured and looks like the shellac (?) is bubbled rather than being green and smooth like everything else.

I'll try to get a good snapshot of the area but it looks like the lead itself has been overloaded and shorted out. Not being a masterful electronics worker, I hazard that I won't be able to effect a repair without the actual schematics.

A bit more research in the next few days, plus checking flea-BAY to see if any others are available.

Recently I found myself in a similar situation to you and was able to get a "legit" IMax-B6 for an incredible price ... yep, there are clones out there! The video gave me the nerve to pop my dead one open and there was a very visible and very blown fuse. Swapped it out, tested the unit, and now I have one I don't mind powering off my car battery at the field. Some units do not have such an apparent fuse on the board.

BTW ... living in rural Ontario means my LHS is over 100 miles away ... by the time I add the gas and the meals (plus stopping to let my wife shop at one of the malls) it is easier for me to order what I want. The iMax came from eBay with free shipping and arrived within the week.

Just a quick question....Is there a fuse inside the old charger ?
I would ask the hobby stores what charger other people are getting.
I would check Ebay too.

Which balancing charger would you recommend from a GTA hobby shop?

My current balancing charger (a EMax EX-RCLP515) bit the big one last year and I'm now about to pick up the replacement. BTW, no magic puff of smoke, but nothing other than the power light comes on (no fan, no "unit" lights, nothing....)

Basic parameters are 2-5 cells and no more than $75 retail price (not firm but I'm not about to drop a large sum.)

Lets stick to north of the 401 or within a couple blocks south, from Oshawa to Mississauga and as far north as Barrie.

What would you recommend from your LHS?
