Re: Story of a lost DJI Flamewheel F550 - REWARD FOR RETURN!

One thing I haven't heard mention was in the original post you were flying through the fog to get the sunrise. (Spotter wouldn't have mattered ) but Naza in the right conditions has issues with direct sunlight hitting the casing. I ran into something similar but also found out there was a super solar storm the same day. I had one try to fly away on me but managed to get my radio back for mere seconds and was able to cut power. You can see for yourself:

Here is something interesting that I am thinking about now that you've said NAZA can go bonkers like that:

I had an old Blackberry strapped to it. The blackberry was to record GPS log data as I wait for my Eagle Tree OSD that will do it for me in the future. The Blackberry also has an app that acts as a "Find my phone" type thing. I sent it a request for it's location right before it went down. It reported back with coordinates that seemed way too far off. (49°15'49.18"N 122°47'15.97"W). It is unlikely that it made it that far as it is 5 KM from where I expected it to be, but it leaves me wondering if it just went full tilt eastward (Heading 113 degrees) instead of home North by North East (Bearing 220 degrees).

Regardless, the scariest part of this is that a 2 KG object may have fallen from 200 meters in the air and put people and property at risk. I definitely recognize the err of my ways.

The replacement for "AirFarce Wun" - as I had named it - has DragonLink UHF, Eagle Tree OSD being recorded to a ground station DVR, Hitect GPS Telemetry, and a Marco Polo finder. Most importantly, it will always be LOS and will always have a spotter.
Just a note on this with the blackberry they utilize AGPS which means it uses data from the closest cell tower to assist the GPS (the "A" stands for assisted). The find phone service probably could not find the current location so it defaulted to the tower location. In future a word of advice for anyone looking to use a cell phone with GPS to track things , USE NOKIA, they are offer the best GPS solution and can operate as true GPS not AGPS, plus you can find them cheap enough, and most have killer camera/video capabilities as well.....

I know the feeling is like loosing a quad and camera, a thrown prop landed mine at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. As silly as it might sound, if you have a GPS location sent by your Blackberry, I would not poo-poo it but get right on it and have a look. Also, just for giggles, send out another location signal and see if it has moved. You might as well use the tools you have as it might just pay off. I know I will never see mine again (long story but it is replaced) and the camera on it, but I at least I saw where it went and it wasn't pretty, sigh. Good luck finding yours.

No problem, Peter. I am used to being judged. I am a newlywed and have been on a training course called "These are all the things that are wrong with you" since the wedding in September that my wife is teaching. Part of my degree in "You only live to serve me" with a minor in "Stop being yourself".

I reread Paul's first post and you are correct, it appears that I was too hasty to judge him. My apologies Paul. There is very little anyone can do about a "fly away." Even the most careful attention to details and mitigation plans can be fowled up by simple mechanical or electronic gremlins.

Those folks that are flying their aircraft or quads, hex or octocopters BVLOS scare the hell out of me There is absolutely no way that they are able to apply sense and avoid techniques to safeguard general aviation traffic. Although UAV regulations development in Canada (whether commercial or recreational) is moving verrrry slowly, it will take only once incident or accident to bring the wrath of Transport Canada down on everyone to the point where no will be able to enjoy the hobby; bureaucracy tends to move more swiftly and completely in the face of public outcry.

Paul, again, sorry for my hasty judgement of you and, as I said in my initial post, I am sorry for the loss of your quad. Good luck locating it.

Great advice, thanks. I was actually just getting around to the LOC setup that would have really helped.

Another thing that happened that day: As I was in panic mode and driving closer to try to regain control I think I may have switched back to ATT GPS mode from failsafe. This would have put it into a hover instead of RTH, so it would have fallen right where it was.

Rob, if you have your phantom hooked up to the assistant(props off), turn off your tx and see if the pointer goes to the blue section, failsafe. If it does, then your phantom will start RTH with signal loss. You can also set it to the switch, GPS, atti and rth/manual/atti(your choice).

Paul, another thing to have handy is the CL/HL feature enabled. Switch to atti and engage HL. Just pull the stick back to get it home, regardless of the orientation. Do a good ground range check before your next try. This should show you if your gear is affecting range and then you can try to improve it.

Midair, I think Paul was flying within LOS but lost control of it and it went beyond LOS. I had an EDF get away on me flying LOS. Found it 1km away. It happens.

Thanks everyone. I was definitely pushing the limits and that is the biggest lesson learned.

I had tested the RTH function several times, even recently.

Re: Story of a lost DJI Flamewheel F550 - REWARD FOR RETURN!

So sorry for the loss of your aircraft Paulie and sure hope you find it soon.
I have a DJI Phantom that has, under different circumstances, 2 supposedly failsafe modes.
One is just a plain landing on the spot and the other is Return To Home.
Neither one of these have I been able to test as of yet due to -25C temps and 5 feet of snow.
My questions is, is it necessary to have one of these failsafe modes checked off as your preference in the NAZA-M V-2 or will one of these self-activate in the event of a power/signal loss etc. etc.?
Again, Good Luck Paulie
