Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

Chances are you will not be able to improve in any way on this one. You might think it has a great airframe because it is made of metal plates but in reality they are heavy and floppy compared to the lightweight plastic used on hobby grade machines.

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

Thanks bro I did look them up and still am not sure of which I will go with. But all in good time.

In the mean time, i'd like to reiterate that my goal with the "toy" heli is to rebuild / upgrade it, not nesscessarily for the ease of doing it but rather for the hack value of doing so. My reason for asking was more to see in anyone else had been inspired to do the same.

I will start by gutting the airframe, measuring rotor span, tail rotor span, identifying main rotor motor's and looking for either new main rotors and motors or just sourcing better motors to begin with.

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

I listed 3 hobby grade ones that size in my first post. Do a google on them.

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

thanks for the advice on hobby grade products, kind of a bummer that no one makes a big one like the one I got, but with more quality parts, I love the huge size, but prefer to be flying as opposed to making repairs and always adjusting it

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

Durable, easy to learn on and outdoor capable usually don't go together.

The CX3 is another coaxial but as it has a swashplate will do better than your current one. Personally, I'd suggest a 120sr for outdoor and a msr for indoor. I'm not a big fan of eflite but they pretty much own the beginner market and most hobby shops have parts for them.

As for the one you currently own. There is no hobby grade electronics that I know that will run it. What you've got is really a big toy, most hobby grade helis are at least 4ch and induce forward/reverse and side/side flight via swashplate, not a rotor on the tail. You might be able to find some way to translate the elevator channel from a lama3 to a brushed motor for the tail but not worth it IMO.

The E-Flite Blade CX-3 is a good deal right now! It can handle a light breeze and is pretty affordable also!

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

here's the only info I could find on it http://www.rc-fever.com/flyer-heli-m...th=337_671_552

So I've made 2 decisions.

1 being that I am going to purchase a proper hobby helicopter.

2 that I would still like to see if I can rebuild this one better with-

-better electronics
-motors
-better coaxial rotors etc. (or maybe even single rotor)

essentially just keep the airframe, and build it up, more for the sake of doing it then of nesscessity.

Can anyone recommend a durable, resonably easy to learn on, and outdoor capable heli?

cheers

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

Why don't you provide a link to the heli? we still don't know what it is...

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

well i'm hoping to change the 4 in 1, motors and battery as well as transmitter, so Im wondering if I can just pick out a 4 in 1, motors and battery of appropriate voltage etc?

but yeah considering the amount of guesswork and the cost of parts Im probably better off just going hobby grade.

thanks, seems a shame to throw away a nice airframe though.

Re: upgrading cheap rc heli

The problem with replacing the 4 in 1 is you'd also need the remote.

You need to size the esc to the motors too so without knowing what you have it's hard to make recommendations.

That said, the esky big lama and walkera walkera 400d / lama3 are options.
