Re: Hobby King idiots

Richard has got to the meat of the topic.

I am never for banning anything. Never a shortage of knuckleheads intent on doing something dumb regardless of who produces or sell any hobby gear.

There are consequences if you choose to be a knuckleheads and if someone shows up at your club to do anything that you know will have a potential effect on community good standing, someone better speak or those spectating become knuckleheads by default.

As a side bar. many decades back in our isolated Northern town, a control line mounted Dynajet was fired up in a local school yard…………once…….. RESULT: A total ban on ANY model aircraft motor being run within city limits. This became a problem when the municipalities amalgamated and the "city" expanded, taking in our past and current field. It was just in the last few years, through much work, that our club fathers managed to have that repealed.

….. protect your "privilege" folks.

Re: Hobby King idiots

As with so many aspects of our multi-faceted hobby, the problem lies not so much with availability as it does with irresponsible use.
Pulse jets are noisy, run very hot and are a major fire hazard. They were most popular in the fifties when the American DYNAJET was the one to own. In that era, the English magazine Aeromodeller even had plans and instructions for building one of your own - The Brauner pulse jet. It had no electric ignition. One played a blow torch on the tail pipe and the backfire started it. I have the article if anyone is interested.
I have a Dynajet that I have owned for fifty years. It is in a showcase along with a few other unusual engines.
Getting back to the issue of irresponsibility, we have to accept that we share the planet with other living creatures and we also share the airspace above it. If we act selfishly and dangerously, we are going to feel repercussions.
My days on the MAAC board are over, but I do still represent MAAC to Transport Canada and I can assure you that we are under close observation in our use of airspace. Endangering other aircraft is a crime. It can lead to a sentence of life imprisonment. We are also prohibited from endangering anything on the ground.
Recently, FPV, one of the greatest innovations that our hobby has seen, has led to people flying too high and beyond line of direct sight. It may be "cool" to brag that you can fly a quadcopter over your neighbour's house whilst sipping a scotch in your living room, but doing this sort of thing puts our hobby at enormous risk. It will only take one major accident to risk the banning of our activities.
So, buy your pulse jet, have fun running it in a remote area and fly your FPV model to your heart's content, but please remember that there are thousands of others who wish to do the same and do not put their hobby in jeopardy.
Other than that - MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Sounds like a very safe motor for the masses since it won't start!

Re: Hobby King idiots

Although I really don't have a dog in this fight since I'm from the U.S., I can tell you from personal experience judging control line speed at our NATs that pulse jets are so noisy that a few miles will not insure that no one will hear them. When "jet day" arrived at our Nationals, practically everyone on the huge airport of Lawrenceville, IL turned to look in our direction. This site, incidentally had been used as a training field for four-engined bombers in WWII. We wore foam ear plugs plus "earmuff" hearing protection. But the sound came through loud and clear. I was told that it resonated from our skulls to the ear sensors. When I heard pulse jet model engines were banned in whole countries, I was not surprised. Dzl

I will be getting one as well, if I get a positive feedback from Frank after his arrives.

Re: Hobby King idiots

I would think most of us know what the noise limits are at our club. That said only a fool would run it in a noise sensitive area. It's certainly cool and in my check out box on HK. I sold my redhead a few years back. Now I've a chance to get another and at a good price, I have spare petals too lol!!
