Re: What makes a "Fun-Fly" fun? At my club's fun-flys we advertise a willingness to give folk an intro flight. From 11:00 AM until 1:00 Pm anyone wanting a flight will be given one, We even limit the number of planes in the air to three (often there is only one other one up) to make it less stressful. We have some takers, but are not overwhelmed by any means. |

Re: What makes a "Fun-Fly" fun? Hey guys, I'll admit that I haven't read every post here but I just wanted to jump in and say that I LOVE the idea of drawing a few names of non-flyers and giving them a go at the sticks. If someone had given me that shot before I bought into the sport I'd have been ecstatic. I for one would be very happy to buddy box anyone, on any of my planes including my show peices. Afterall, I have control of the plane again whenever I like. I'll back that up by carrying a buddy box with me to whatever events I attend this summer. So far I'm planning coronation and drayton. So those of you who know me, or even just know me to see me, if you want to point someone my direction who's never flown feel free. At an event or otherwise. |

Re: What makes a "Fun-Fly" fun? Candy drop is allways a hit with the kids. If a big enuff crowd, you can split them into age groups, and do multiple drops.IE 3 to 5 yrs old, then 6 to 10 yrs old. Another event would be a duration type event, that will tax both novice and experienced pilots. You have 1 min to get to altitude, then chop pwr back to an idle, and see who can stay up the longest. Could add a spot landing on the end of it too. For the rookie pilots, maybe have the club trainer handy, to help them out, so they are less intimidated. You could limit the skies to say 3 planes only, unless your maybe doing a ribbon cut, and say 1 plane if its 1/4 scale or bigger. We used to pay 10 bucks for our meal, but OMG was it a good steak.BBQ it our selves on an 8 foot long bbq.Chicken was available too. |

Re: What makes a "Fun-Fly" fun? I think a welcoming atmosphere is very important. We station someone at the road into the field to welcome all visitors with a big smile, tell them where to park, where to unload there planes, answer any questions, and end with "have a Great Day of flying". If a Fun-Fly is not fun then what's the point? |

Re: What makes a "Fun-Fly" fun? [QUOTE=OntAeronut;920958]What makes a funfly fun... well, that can be a interesting subject. It depends on the people the most. If you have a great group of people, you don't even have to have "extra" things to do, you just fly and yak and have a great time with good friends. However, if you have uptight pricks who think they are rent a cops for the aviation bussiness and who throw down so many rules that it just sucks the enjoyment out of the day. Or you have that one person who thinks they are gods gift to our hobby sticking his nose into everyone's bussiness. *had one at a funfly once, till he stuck his hand in a prop*...amazing how fast he shutup after that. All in all, Good friends, good weather, equals good flying with is just good times. couldn't have said it better .... had one old guy who was flying an old old high wing .40 size sitting in the stands with a decibel meter when the big gassers were up putting on a show, when someone asked him what he was doing he replied (making sure were legal) lololol. were in the country 10 miles from the nearest town , come on let it be lol |

Re: What makes a "Fun-Fly" fun? instead of having a 1/2 time show with the guys that have no problem flying all day in any crowd ,you could have a quiet hour where the new and more intimidated fliers could benefit from some help from the more experienced pilots, could even have events targeted for the newest fliers. This will encourage participation and let the new fliers get there feet wet flying in large groups.
