Re: Don SMith 1/4 Spit

Question for everyone. I see Ziroli now has a 100" span Spitfire, just shy of 1/4 scale, they have all the accessories, plans are $60, and there's a great page with build photos. It's typical Ziroli construction, which I like, and would lend itself easily to cutting the short kits. The fuse construction is better for alignment than the Don Smith plans. Thoughts? I've already got the Smith Plans, with one airframe built, and parts cut for a second, but would certainly jump ship to the Ziroli Spit if enough are interested. Fire me your feedback!

Re: Don SMith 1/4 Spit

I'm back, after a long month of Radar Electronic Intelligence. Yee Haw. More math than I care to do again for a while. I now have the Mick Reeves plans, so will be doing a careful comparison of those vs the Don Smith ones. These are an older set of Reeves plans, so all the templates are there, but the plans are a copied set, and probably won't do well being copied again, so I'll have to go old school and trace out everything. So, will see if the Smith Plans match for accuracy, and if they are identical, will go with those. Having built one already, I liked the fit of everything and the construction setup for the Smith plans. But whichever one makes the most sense. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress!

Hi Struts,

The engines are pretty well hidden considering the small cowl on the Spit. What is not so clear in the photos is the bottom of fuselage aft of the cowl has a hole in it too. And there is a large hole through the bottom of the firewall. So the air can pass through the cylinder head, past the firewall and out the hole. There maybe some baffling in there to to keep the air flowing the right way.

One other neat trick Dick used to help minimize nose weight was he cheated the engine further forward. And then he made the back part of the spinner separate and fixed it to the cowl.

Fortunately, I was able to get my girlfriend addicted to R/C, she's scratchbuilding a biplane right now! Makes life much easier. She does all the cutting of templates for all the short kits, as well as some cutting and sanding.

They started life as solid foam kits that were picked up at Toledo in the early 90's. I can't remember who sold them. Anyway they were pretty crude kits with not much to go on other than they had roughly the right shape. But Dick was an excellent scratch builder and turned them into fine functional pieces. It is surprising how slow they will approach at. The wings are huge!

I hear ya on having too many planes! Then there is family, work, house upkeep.....

Re: Don SMith 1/4 Spit

I have a soft spot for 1/4 scale Spits too. My friends Pat and Dick, built a pair of them to fly in formation but unfortunately Dick passed away before they could get the Spits up together. I was honoured when Pat asked me to fly the second one. They both fly beautifully but with the scale gear location you have to be careful (and lucky) to prevent a nose over. Here are some pics from that day. The icing on the cake was getting buzzed by Ed Russel's REAL Hurricane just after we finished flying.

Yes, that is the intention to help one and another in the hobby and also to help it grow. Can you make copies of the Mick Reeve cowl part of the plans and send the to me with one of my short kits, this way i can make a foam plug, glass it, make a female mold from it and start casting cowls. I'll just send you one if you help me with the copies of cowl section of the plans. It will be interesting to do this as well as make cowls of my Constellation from the molds that are being made presently......
