Re: I don't get Great Hobbies...

I've spent money now at Great Hobbies and HobbyWholesale for actual person-to-person service, as well as HobbyWorld in Saskatoon (my occasional trips on business have me at the hotel just a few blocks up the street), and I've used both GH, HobbyWholesale, Tower Hobbies and HK (and Rotorquest, now that I think of it) for mail-order and have no real complaints.

Going into any shop is always going to be hit-or-miss, depending on the day, what's in stock at that particular time, and who's working (every place, IMO, has it's less-than-stellar employees), and have no real complaints. I've so far had no issues with any of them, probably for a few reasons:

1) If it's not in stock, don't order it. No point in getting mad at someone at your store or at a warehouse on the other side of the planet, when chances are they can't help it if a supplier drops the ball.

2) If it's not in the shop, and their inventory shows only 1 at another location, don't order it. Wait. It's tempting, but online transactions don't always reconcile with inventory real-time and you could end up waiting weeks.

3) Don't bitch about shipping times from ANY other country. What you've ordered has to cross between one and maybe a dozen international borders, and is going to be subject to all kinds of things out of your control. If I order from the US, I know some knob with Border Services could decide to be a dink that day, or if the customs label isn't just right it's going to be held up. This is often a problem on the US side as well. If I order from Hong Kong, I DO NOT expect it fast; that's why it's CHEAP, and why I picked the CHEAPEST (and slowest) shipping.

When something shows up sooner than expected, great! If not, well, once it leaves the other end, they have no control over what happens to your new thingamajigger. And if you ordered something that wasn't in stock, you're taking your chances- don't blame the vendor!

Rant over. I feel better now.

Re: I don't get Great Hobbies...

Hi,

I've dealt with Great Hobbies for a while now, and yes I've had the odd problem, however whenever I explained the problem they were always very reasonable. I never go to the web with my problems first. I always deal with any vendor first and almost all the time they resolve the problem fairly.

Great Hobbies has always been "great" in my opinion and I will continue to do business with them. As with any vendor I deal with, I always ask if the item is in stock before I order.

Re: I don't get Great Hobbies...

Quite some time ago the CFI of my new club advised me to buy one of these because I would need it at the field:

HAN172 - Digital Servo and Receiver Current Meter

I bought it on March 31st at my local (Ottawa) Great Hobbies. I opened it up, discarded the packaging and put it in my flight box.

At the field this week I learned it was actually this I needed:

HAN171 - Digital Variable Load Voltmeter

An honest mistake on the CFI's part and no hard feelings. Today I called Great Hobbies and explained the situation, including the fact that the purchase was over two months ago and I no longer had the original box. The manager offered me an exchange minus 10%, because the item I was returning was without packaging and would have to be sold as such.

I found that to be more than fair, and went in at lunch today to do the exchange. I continue to be pleased with the service I'm getting.

Props to you, Great Hobbies!

SPOG
although they don't have GP CA. I'm sure they have mercury CA, Bob smith CA, or another kind of CA. I Know the old addij is "find a product and stick with it" but sometimes you have to addpt. Just because they don't have "your brand" doesn't relegate the hobby store to no good.

Great Planes CA is very hard to get across the border these days, due to the language laws. If you want to get GP CA you pretty much have to drive across and get it yourself because they won't let it cross the border without French language on it, for safety purposes.

Re: I don't get Great Hobbies...

i like going into the GH here in Edmonton.

Wholesale place is ok but know what you need or pressure sales goober will attack.

all in all both stores seem to have their good and bad days but i'll go to GH first. Kites and Delights second, Wholesale next. then all else fails search the interwebs. Tower was where i got my start with a lot of my stuff back in the '90s, probably start there net wise....

worst case if coming in from out of town for a special purchase call 'em first.

just waiting for the Sig stock to resupply...

I've been to their store like 10 times and every time i get the same attitude. When i walk into great hobbies i'm always greeted with prompt and polite service. If they don't have what i'm looking for then i go to hobby wholesale only if i know what i'm looking for so i can find it myself and go straight to the register. As for all the people who say they have a warehouse in edmonton if you've ever seen the store it's not that big lol. And as for finding out about stock if you know who to work the gh website you can click on in store stock to see how much they have in what store.

i agree with this 100%
hobby wholesale drives me nuts
great hobbies does have a warehouse it just a few blocks away
