Re: 1940 Plecan FALCON build Bill, we have to do something about that. We lost another good hand at work to the lore of the tar sands ( that's 4 in the last 2 years) so I'm left holding the bag again. On call 24/7 and the work of 3 guys. I told the boss that at my age I'm looking to ramp down not up, I want a 4 day work week this summer and I might just go and find it. We will see if that gets the lead out of his pants! You and I need to enjoy some of this stuff we have accumulated! |

Curious because of the one wheel design like the Falcon. I was watching a video of the Big Gull ( also a one wheel design) and the landing was not pretty. I heard something go crack in the stab. Chris |

It was strange as I was landing from the east and I kept over shooting the strip. Great glide. I decided to try from the west and the Falcon dropped like a rock just before touching down. Zero wind at the time. If you can, come over to our Fun Fly on Saturday. Chris |

Re: 1940 Plecan FALCON build Glad to hear Chris, they all have thier little quirks about them. I'm also going to maiden another oldtimer. It's a Record Hound with a single wheel up front and two little wheels on each stab. Triangular fuse with a wing saddle, no pylon or cabin. You are welcome hear to fly any time Chris, I have around 40 different oldtimer designs that are airborn if there's any you would like to try. Bill |

Re: 1940 Plecan FALCON build A little update. Another calm evening and the Falcon was back in the air. I have added some more downthrust but after tonight in needs more. The additional right thrust has completely stopped the right wing dropping. Previously I had a little wing dropping during the transition to glide from power flight. Now the transition is good. Takeoffs are interesting and I need a helper to hold the right wing tip up till I have some forward movement. Combination of the one wheel and motor torque drops the right wing while it is just starting to move on the ground. Landings are better with the additional downthrust but still fast and heavy. I would like it more graceful and not such a hard impact on the wheel. With the Falcon more stable in the air I ventured up high to see how it stalled. I pointed it into the wind pulled back on the elevator and it pulled up, slowed down and dropped nose forward. Happy so far, then as it was heading down the Falcon turned left and entered a left hand spiral. Scared me but it was easy to pull out with the rudders. I tried the stall several times and it always went into this left hand spiral. It looks like more head scratching and changes. Chris |

Re: 1940 Plecan FALCON build Well it is time for an update. With calm air this evening I headed out to the field with the Falcon to see if the modifications I made last year would make this Falcon soar. I am happy to report that scary wing drop has disappeared. The wing dropping is nothing more than torque from the 12 inch prop. I added some right thrust on the motor to clear it up. The reason behind wing drop being so severe is the twin rudders. A normal tail has the rudder in the prop blast but the twin rudders are out of the artificial airflow and I need to gain speed for the twin rudders to become effective to correct the drop. A normal tail setup is easy to correct wing drop with just a blip of rudder at any speed. I had three 10 min flights this evening with about 6 landings. I will say that one wheel gear is interesting to land on. Haven't quite got the knack of it yet as no landing was smooth. At least to my liking. Nothing broken yet. I really worry about snapping one of the fins off in a less than stellar landing. More flight testing is needed as the cg needs some adjustment and I need much more downthrust on the motor. It was nice to be able to relax while soaring with the Falcon and enjoy the shape of it in the air.  Chris |
