Re: Thunder Tiger Victoria Build Thread

I was back at it today. I made some rigging changes this morning, which is an improvement, but still room for improvement. The good news is that I have learned something that needs to be considered in the setup both times that I sailed it. Today, the wind was very light at first. During this time, I discovered that in light breezes, the boat takes a while to convert sideways motion into forward motion, but once it starts to, it picks up in a hurry. To put it into perspective, I'm a pretty good swimmer, and if I was using flippers, I don't think that I could catch it when the wind comes on a bit.

I'm amazed at how similar it looks and sails as compared to a full size boat.

For my 2nd hour, the wind was picking up quite a bit, but definitely not steady. Sailing it definitely involved a lot of stick movements, to keep the sails trimmed, and stay on course. It keeps you busy, that's for sure! What a blast. I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to get bored of sailing.

Great picture it gives a good idea that the boat was clipping right along!

Nice!

No I didn't have the issues you are with the supplied string so perhaps it is the bow string. Is it waxed? A buddy gave me some bow string and it has a very sticky wax coating.

The pond is thawed, and I maidenned it! AWESOME! It isn't very windy today, and where my pond is it's kind of sheltered, so the breeze wasn't very steady, swirled around a lot. but when it did pick up a bit, the boat is surprisingly fast, and it is FAR from easy. The good new is that if you do make a mistake, the boat usually stops, as opposed to what planes do when you make a mistake. Very Handy!

I did learn a few things. My sail rigging sucks, it keeps getting twisted up on itself. I think that the stock rigging line is probably better for the sail rigging than the bow serving string that I tried. There is also a ring that the main sheet goes threw, and it is held in place by three adjustable lines. Something needs to be improved with this, but I have to think about it for a while.

Oh, and the number one change required, The metal mast rings that hold the sails on don't work for beans. They are too tight, and won't let the sail rotate on the mast, which totally ruins the shape of the sail.

Now I have to repeatedly tell myself, "I only need one boat, I only want one boat".

Check out great hobbies to see if they have any in stock. I saw one in Flightcraft in Kitchener, but it was $100 more than what I paid at Great Hobbies. Overall, the kit was good to build. Just enough tedious stuff to make you angry, but not enough to make you shelf the thing.

I'm hoping to try it in a few weekends when the temps come back up a bit.

I never thought i'd be interested in one of these, but.... you've caught my attention. That is a really nice looking boat, excellent job putting it together. Now you've sparked an interest here as well.

Thanks Mervin. I look forward to learning about sailing this summer, it will likely be something I can really get my teeth into and add it to my other hobby addictions!
