funny how some planes last forever.

One of our members built the "fairhope Flyer" from MAN plans and still flys it every year, it was built in 1987! it's older than a couple of the pilots in our club!

Re: Building engine nacelles for scratchbuilt A-10 Warthog

Go ahead Bill and build one. It's a great plane and it's easy to build. Mine is build as per plan other than for the engine nacelles.

I looked at some of my old pictures and I think I built it in 1993-1994. That would make that plane almost 20 years old...

I will try to get a video of it this summer...

Thanks Alain, I will probably build the nacelles just as you have and then play around with different configurations as time allows, to see if there is any noticeable difference. The 2 x 70mm fans on 4s are going to be crazy overkill on this light foam glider anyway .

Re: Building engine nacelles for scratchbuilt A-10 Warthog

On my A-10, the inlet and outlet are the same and it performs really well. A smaller outlet should increases the speed of the efflux therefore give more speed but it would probably also increase the load on the fan which might then reduce the rpm and therefore the speed...The dynamics involved here would have to be tested in a wind tunnel as static testing doesn't give you any real information on what is most efficient.

I personaly think that for a model of that size, unless you have a reason like maintaining a scale profile, you should keep the outlet the same size than the fan. A larger inlet will help the fan breathe and prevent it from stalling or "starving".

In my research for my build, I understand that the outlet of the fans should be a smaller diameter than the fans themselves. Yours look to be the same diameter straight through - is that correct?

Re: Building engine nacelles for scratchbuilt A-10 Warthog

Thanks guys!

The fans are 74 mm units with 2570kv outrunners. They were cheap units (about $20 each) sold all assembled with motor from HK. I don't think that they are still available.
