Re: Built By Ty - Balsa USA 1/4-scale Cub

Lol, year three coming up for this thread! Haha! It's still not done! Due to scheduling changes at home, I probably won't be doing much RC racing this winter except for a few big events, so I'll have very few excuses not to finish this!

A bit more done on the Cub today. Detail strips around the windows and doors, hardwood side strips up the fuse side and the tail hinges slotted and positioned. Not much but it's a start. Was on a long week shift this week, so didn't get anything done during the week. Before I started on this today I finished up putting together my GP Silhouette foamy. It's ready for maiden but the wind doesn't look great for the next bit. Hopefully I'll get out with it on my day off Thursday.

If it is too nasty Thursday to fly the Silhouette I'll probably get more done on the Cub. Just need to hinge the door and window and do a bit of detail sanding and then I'll be ready to get to building the wing. I've decided that it will be a clipped-wing Cub and I'll be shortening it by two bays. Dave T from the shop will also be doing one identical to this, so we'll have some fun doing some formation flying!

Flying wires in place on tail.

Rudder hinged and elevator temporarily mocked up to check clearances on recessing.

That's all for the last few days.

I'm back!

Getting the stuff back out! In the picture is a walnut-scale J4-e Cub Coupe from Dumas. It was a fun build and ultimately made me want to get back at the big one!

Thanks for posting the build. Take lots of pictures please.

Not much in the way of hardware. This is definitely an older style kit with lots of big wire bits and cheap ABS plastic cowling. I'll be replacing the cowl with a fiberglass unit for sure.

As for things fitting well, it's not too bad. It's all die-cut but some of the parts, especially the ply pieces, aren't cut all that well. I really wish it was laser cut but for the price of these kits you can't expect a whole lot, I guess.

I'll definitely try and keep this build-up rolling along with pictures and such. Now that I've got a new phone with a decent camera built in I can snap pics and upload them direct all from the comfort of the shop. I was starting to get lazy because the pic loading process was a bit of pain, especially with my shop being in the basement and the PC is up on the second floor.

Nothing more to share on the build as I was out racing RC off-road buggies tonight instead of working on the Cub! More progress in the coming days, though!
