Re: glow plug choice

Bill,
If you want some idle bar plugs, I used to have a whole BAG of them (unknown manufacturer - but I had dozens and dozens).

I also have started to really like the Merlin plugs (and I am pretty much a die hard OS plug fan). I have been doing a lot of running and testing with the various Merlin plugs - they have a lot for various fuels/oil ranges - and they are very good.

If you want to try one let me know I can send you one or two

Re: glow plug choice

For your app an idle bar should not be required. Just as the name suggests, it was there to prevent liquid fuel droplets from directly impinging on the coils at idle and cooling it off. At higher RPM it should have no effect.

Along with nitro content I also find outside temp has an effect on plug choice. Normally I run all my 2-strokes on OS #8, regardless of RPM, switching to #3 in cold weather. The only exception so far are my FOX motors. Using up the current supply of Fox legacy plugs, but have had no probs running OS in them, as well. Just be carefull to get the proper length plugs to prevent contact with the piston.

Re: glow plug choice

I use K&B 1L (7311) plugs on all my high revving engines, ie: Dubb Jett engines, I use 15% nitro, they seem to last a good many runs and they are also cheap by the dozen thru Mecoa.

Have fun

Re: glow plug choice

Fuel being used right now is 10% Cool Power and then I add 4oz of castor to a gallon. The plug I am currently useing is unknowen but does have an idle bar. Motor runs perfect and strong but would like to have some back up plugs on hand.
Thanks for the info guy's.....

The choice of glow plug is somewhat dependent on the % nitro fuel you will be using. Low nitro/no nitro will require a hotter plug like an OS A3. Higher nitro fuel will be better with a medium plug like the OS #8. You have indicated you will be running a header/tuned pipe which maybe suggests you are looking for a lot of revs and will likely run higher nitro - 10% - or higher, so maybe a medium plug like the #8 is the best choice for you.
That having been said I am partial to the Fox plugs with idle bar. I don't run Webra's but have for years run old HB's (out of west Germany) on a tuned pipe with low nitro fuels. They always ran well on the Fox plugs and the plugs seemed to last longer than OS plugs. Next best IMHO would be the K&B plugs again with idle bar.
So I think I agree with you - medium heat with idle bar - maybe 5% nitro and let the pipe do the work.

Re: glow plug choice

Hi William you could also use the O.S #7 plug which is a medium hot plug.I personally in most cases do not use idle bars.In .61 engines i use #6 plug formally A3 which is a hot plug.

Just looking for other opinions on installing the best glow plug for a Webra 61 speed with header and tuned pipe. I've been told the OS#8 would be best but I'm thinking a medium plug with an idle bar would be best.
All opinions welcome Thanks

Bill
