Re: broken gears mystery

We will never likely know the true cause John, but all this input will certainly help others in the future.
thanks

Re: broken gears mystery

Bill: I had a Saito .90 fs and decided to put it away for a while. As usual, I cleaned it then filled it with oil. A year or so later I decided to use it again and started it for the first time following the lay off. I forgot about the oil and hit it with my starter. Broke the teeth on the cam. Sent it to the states for a $70 repair following which the engine ran perfectly. Cheers

Re: broken gears mystery

Good point Roger and you are probably right. Many guys have a habit of doing things in reverse, why....I wish I knew.
I'll find a jug for this 82 and have it airborn again soon, poor thing! lol

Re: broken gears mystery

Hi Bill I think I can answer this one , A friend of mine that has no business running four cycle engines would start his 62 and go full throttle on the cold engine with the engine so lean you could hear it hammering ,he would then reach down and slowly richen it up . many times when doing this he would be too slow and the motor would lock solid and throw the prop. I would just shake my head in disbelief as he cursed the motor. The last time he did it ,it locked with a loud crack .When investigated the teeth were broken on the cam . I never looked much further but I am sure his chrome was toast after all those lock ups. those satios earned my respect after seeing them take that beating . I saw him lock that poor thing up dozens of times before if finally failed. Roger

Re: broken gears mystery

I don't believe the engine had ever been taken apart prior to me getting it Ross.

Re: broken gears mystery

+1 on the hydraulic lock senario. Dealt with lots of them on full size Pratts. Perhaps the former owner had it apart and mis-timed it. Any marks or dents on the piston head?

Re: broken gears mystery

I can't imagine the mechanism where a hydraulic lock can stress the cam gear? Can someone enlighten me please?

Re: broken gears mystery

No JP, there are some Magnum/ASP parts that will fit OS engines as they are basically knock-offs. They will not fit Saito engines.

Re: broken gears mystery

I've seen several Saito 82's that were ran way too rich on both needles. The engine shook the air frame excessively. The idle speed was up higher because of the richness of the mixture. When the pilot hit the throttle for take-off the engine was running very rough and hesitated to the point that I thought it was going to stall. I run several 82's and they shake until they've been set-up properly.

Maybe a partial hydraulic lock at a very rich idle mixture.

I've seen lots of 4 strokes running very rich at idle that through a prop on the ground. Maybe that could strip a tooth on the cam also.

Cheers Floyd
