Re: Solar Cularis

He could use a lot less battery power with more solar cells and fly forever with that glider!

Re: Solar Cularis

Slight change in plans. I am going to try using these cells instead of the current ones. These ones are 3x6 and put out 3.6 amps peak and 1.8 watts peak. Might be a pain but I will see. I might have to break them to contour the wing properly.

Re: Solar Cularis

Even that isnt really a limit. The tx has a lipo which will fly for about 8 to 10 hours. Once that is dead, im ready to come home!!! And the sun will probably be gone down anyways

Re: Solar Cularis

I love my Cularis...flies like a dream! I'm very curious to see how this project turns out. What kind of flight times are you hoping to achieve?

Re: Solar Cularis

Here is a link to my cularis in a thermal. This was fully loaded at just under 7lbs. Anyone who has launched this plane for me knows how heavy it is. It still glides great. If i can be under 5lbs with my new Solaris(thanks Lorne!) then it should thermal much better! Skip to 5:45 or so in the video to see the start of the thermal. Vertical climbrate is on the top left of the video. You can see we are easily over 500feet per min climbrate at some points. Alititude is the ladder on the right.

Re: Solar Cularis

Im guessing one gram. There is very little wiring involved that i see. They have to be tabbed together and such, but thats not a big deal. My old cularis thermalled up 500 feet weighing 7 lbs. It had 4s 5000 for batteries. Its supposed to have a 3s 2100. It also had full fpv gear.

This attached pic will charge a 2s battery at 1.2 amps maximum. This is 18 cells. The glider will have 72 of them. The wing will be mostly all cells.

Re: Solar Cularis

1 gram! ...that's amazing ...you should be fine and not have to worry about anything I just posted... other than perhaps the CG and keeping the weight reasonably close to the wing roots.
